darn j.t. and his blessed name

j.t. (blessed be his name) posted a video on his blog explaining why the writers decided to strike. this would make me feel bad about wish they were not on strike if it was not for the fact that their strike has postponed “24.” i understand them wanting to get their due for their work but this is “24” we’re talking about. they really should have considered that before they went on strike. i find it hard to disagree with j.t. (blessed be his name) because he is a youth ministry god, but i do have to remind him that this strike is postponing “24” and that is simply not acceptable.

SIDE NOTE – for those who are curious my cute, intelligent, doctoral wife has made it to honduras safely. she will be there until the 18th while see helps with the operation smile project that is going on down there. if you wanted to keep her in your prayers we would both appreciate it greatly.

  1. Photographers are going through the same thing, except of course we don’t have the benefit of a union. I don’t know if you’ve been following the crap Getty has been pulling lately. I actually submitted portfolios to several stock agencies and Getty was not one of them for this reason (new media usage rates). Their loss.

  2. You know… I will probably be singing the same tune if this strike threatens to interfere with the February premiere, and ensuing continuous season of LOST, Season 4.

So – time’s gonna tell on that one.

But you’ve gotta admit – if that youtube video is correct – that the writers are kind of getting screwed on the DVD sales. Especially since “home video” is where the real money is made on movies now, and not even remotely at the box office.

  3. @brad – i knew getty had pulled a few things and that many photographers were pushing their work to other stock photo companies but i’ve never know exactly what was going on. it’s hard to find stuff on google because every time i type in “getty” i receive lots of articles with their photos.

  4. Well they have made a lot of decisions recently that are bad for photographers. The one that got everyone up in arms was $49 for unlimited use of a Rights Managed image for web/new media. Those terms are unheard of. Remember that Getty takes 60-80%, they were basically giving images away for free and saying they would make it up in volume (of course they will, but the photographers who finance the shots won’t). They shortened it to 1 year after ASMP threw a fit but it’s still bad.

John Harrington has done a lot of commentary on it if you’re interested:
