Deer Hides

ok, i’m going to start this by admitting that i know this is a bit off. the above photo is from the lions club building that is on the main stevens point area drag. it is exactly what it looks like. the lions club is seeking to raise funds to take kids to their lions club camps by getting people to donate the hides from the deers that they kill during hunting season. i think it’s brilliant and extremely creative. someone in the lions club realized that they could take something most people throw away or at the most turn into fleet farm for a $10 gift card and use it to raise funds for accomplishing their mission. apparently it is working because the box keeps filling up. this is not your traditional way of accomplishing an organization’s goal and that is what i love about it.

if only the church could be this creative. if only tapestry can be this creative. well maybe as creative as the spirit of the deer hide gathering. i’m not real sure that i want to go about collecting deer hides.

  1. I don’t mean to be stupid, but what exactly do they do with the deer hides after they collect them that raises money? And what is Fleet Farm? I guess that project works better up there where it’s freezing all the time than it would here where it is frequently in the 70’s in hunting season. I don’t think I would want to walk by a box full of deer hides in Alabama.

  2. We make clothes out of them and wear them to fight the cold. Nah, really I have no idea what they do with them either. I can tell you what Fleet Farm is though. It is a wonderfully amazing and confusing store. Think of combining Walmart, Lowes, a sporting goods store, and a farm store all into one. You can buy clothes (not the most stylish, but warm and durable), food, tools, farm equipment, cow vaccines, fishing lures, camping equipment, etc. all in one place. It’s quite the adventure!

  3. i would imagine that you are right that a collection box would not work in alabama. i was just trying to suggest that we “think outside of the box” in what we do 😉

as for what deer hide is used for it makes all kind of great leather products. it’s a very soft leather that is still strong. in fact, the gloves i wear for curling are made of deer leather.
