a great shirt

surfing around for some new slides to display in the loop before tapestry each week (i make a few and i “”acquire” a few every now and then) i found this shirt. it was an idea for a CHRISTmas outreach at table rock fellowship. it made me smile.

sunday 1.3.2009 @ tapestry

if you’re coming to tapestry this week i have a request of you. would you mind bringing something to tapestry that has broken, you’ve broken, or has just been in your way over 2009 and (this is the important part) you would like to get rid of. it needs to be something that you would be okay with it being destroyed or given away to someone else. it needs to be something that you don’t mind getting rid of – it’s even better if you really want to get rid of it but you haven’t been able to get rid of on your own.

i hope to see you sunday.

tubing @ sylvan park

the above shows what the terrells and our friends the turners did last night. it is sylvan tubing park in wausau and i would HIGHLY recommend it. $7.50 for your lift tag and equipment and all the tubing you can handle. it was amazing. woohoo!

the handmade touch

jan's card

a thread wrote me a note this week that made my month (possibly my year). the note was really great but i wanted to post the above photo which is a scan of the card the note came with. it is a handmade watercolor made by the person who wrote the note. i just think it is so cool that she took the time to produce something personal rather than just sending an email or even a note card. it was so much cooler knowing that she took the time to paint something to then write on.

i may just have to learn from jan and try to write a few notes in 2010 on the back of things that i have produced. these will probably have to be photos since i don’t really paint.

is this sad?

DSC_0002_edited-1

a long time ago socks would have been some of the worst CHRISTmas gifts i could have received. invariably i always received a few pairs from my parents but i was never excited about them (sorry mom and dad but i was a kid). it really must be a sad statement concerning my age that i was excited about receiving two pair of socks this CHRISTmas (thanks parents and in-laws).

i have truly become old when warm socks bring a smile to my face.

SIDE NOTE – the above socks are x-socks winter run socks. while i haven’t run in them yet and therefore can’t speak to how good they are on a cold winter run, i can say that wearing them around the house they feel amazing. kind of like compression socks. and added benefit is that the are labeled “l” for left and “r” for right so as long as i’m not wearing shoes i will always know what side is my left side.

unfortunately i did not notice the “l” & “r” when i was putting on the socks for this photo 🙂

relational gifts & the reason for the season

DSC_0017

it has been a wonderful CHRISTmas day. i spent the morning and early afternoon with the fam and then we were joined by a few threads for whatever meal comes between lunch and supper (lupper?) and a documentary (“the king of kong” which is a great documentary.

i hear some many people say “remember the reason for the season” and for pam and i part of remembering the birth of our REDEEMER is remembering that his parents had no place for them. therefore, we love having people over at our home who have no place to go on CHRISTmas. of course, it also makes for a great time. for example, one of the guys who came over tonight brought his boxer. boxers are very curious and full of energy. basset hounds on the other hands are not very energetic and like to be left alone. if made for some interesting dogs moments – for example the box definitely ran over the bassets several times.

the other thing i loved was the relational gifts that we gave each other. each one of us got a gift from one of the other members of the family that required more effort and time than cash. the beauty of the gifts was that they reflected knowledge of and concerning for the receiver.  for example, the photo above is pam’s gift to me. it is a football autographed by bart starr. she went through allot and received helped from an old friend (thanks bernard) to get this ball for me.

i’m not sure that many of the gifts we give each other actually honor CHRIST very much BUT i am convinced that relational gifts are much more likely to honor CHRIST. one of the guys with us today made and gave away nine handmade blankets for his friends and family. he showed me a photo from his cell phone of all the blankets underneath his “charlie brown CHRISTmas tree.” he told me about how much fun giving these gifts had been for him.

AS A SIDE NOTE – i don’t really think we do a very good job of remembering the “reason for the season” by just going to CHRISTmas services, singing songs, and focusing on family time. family time is great. there is no doubt about it. yet i wonder if we celebrate the season better by “inviting the wanderer into our home.” i wonder what CHRISTmas would be like if all the believers in JESUS focused on bringing others into their homes.
