this is scarily genius

how to unlock your car with string

i’m personally glad to know this car unlocking technique, yet i am also scared of ever again leaving anything in any of the family cars that have these types of locks. this was way to easy and it makes perfect sense why it would be so easy. unlocking a car like this could be a life safer for someone who has locked his/her keys in their car but it could be used for evil far too easily. brilliant and scary.

creativity is king

the above ad won doritos’s “crash the super bowl” contest for the best doritos super bowl commercial. how much did this amazing advertisement cost? $20. the guy who made it for $20 won a million dollars from doritos for having the best doritos commercial during the super bowl. not a bad return on his investment. actually the commercial ended up being rated the 6th best overall commercial during this year’s super bowl.

this is a wonderful example of how important creativity is. money is helpful but the most important thing is the creativity that forms the story and inspires how the commercial was made. i think it would be a safe assumption to state that every other commercial played during the super bowl cost more than $20 but but only a few were as good.

SIDE NOTE – my favorite book on the subject of creativity is "a whack on the side of the head: how you can be more creative". it is such a good book that i need to read it again soon.

hanna

hanna-movie-trailer

pam and i just finished watching “hanna” and it must have been a good movie because pam not only watched it but made comments concerning the plot. it has to be a pretty good action flick for my wife to remain interested. i was just impressed that the hero (or more correctly heroine) of the movie is a 16 year old girl. there are not many movies where a 16 year old girl kicks everyone’s butt. the movie is basically a bourne identity movie about a girl. i think they did a pretty good job with it.

the walking dead

it is becoming a common occurrence for adam to introduce me to some form of media that i really end up liking. it was true with doctor who (probably my favorite tv discovery of 2011) and with the civil wars (who pam and i now both love). i still am able to introduce my punk 17 year old kid to stuff every now and then but it is becoming increasingly more likely that he will be introducing me to something rather than me to him.

the walking dead is an example of another show that adam introduced me to that i am really liking. i love zombie stories. zombie stories are a medium for discussing bigger issues. that is what makes them so great. this happens because the stories are about the people trying to survive the zombie apocalypse rather than about the zombies. the zombies are the equivalent of a natural disaster. they are just the danger that makes the story of survival possible. zombies are with out personality and character development. you don’t watch a zombie movie to learn how a zombie changes and grows. nope you watch the movie to see the survivors change and grow. will the survivors go to the dark or light side? will they stay human or become beasts before they are ever infected? zombie stories end up critiquing society and that is what i love about them.

i just started watching “the walking dead” but i can already tell that i am going to really like it. it has already started dealing with bigger issues. how do the different races and socio-economic groups work together? will the needs of the individual or the group be most valuable? i’ve watched most of the first season and i am loving it. netflix is paying for itself right now. 🙂
