2012 bock run

Image03032012115825_edited-1

today was the 2012 point bock run, which is one of my favorite runs. there is always a great atmosphere around it and i end up seeing lots of friends in the race. i ran the race today not really expecting much since i’ve only been running about 30-40 miles a month for the past 4 months. not enough miles to really improve from my personal best from last year of 40:36 (8:08 per mile). i was just hoping to keep a pace of 9:45 per mile (around 48:45 for the 5 mile course). i figured i couldn’t do much better than that considering how little running i have done.

i was pretty pleased when i crossed the finish line at 46:34 (9:17 per mile). my overall time and the fact that my last mile was at an 8:43 per mile pace encourages me to think that with the proper practice i might get close to my half marathon personal best (1:58:40 – 9:04 per mile) by the time of the oshkosh half marathon on april 22.

as you can see from the above time stats i am a slow runner. i realize that i am not one of the speed demons and i don’t try to pretend like i am. i try to start in a position in the pack that is appropriate for my speed level. that is why it drives me nuts how many people who walk the race decide that they should be in the front of the pack for the starting gun. i’m sure they have very valid reasons in their minds for why they should start at the front of the pack. for example, they might think…

  • they are distantly related to steve prefontaine and thereby will go from a walker to an extremely fast runner at some time during the race.
  • they have a really fast friend who they believe absolutely needs their encouragement for the 50 feet that this walker is able to keep up with his/her friend.
  • they are convinced that if they start at the front of the pack they will end up drafting on the back of the pack and be pulled along to a faster time.
  • perhaps they had beans for supper the night before and want to share the beans’ effect with all the other runners as a practical joke and therefore need to start in the front of the pack.

or perhaps they have less noble reasons like not caring. i really don’t begrudge them being slow. after all i am slow. and i’m definitely not talking about people who are doing the galloway run/walk system. i completely understand the run/walk system and i don’t blame them at all when i see them walking (mainly because they will probably pass me later). i’m talking about the people who walk the entire race. why would any such walker start the race in the 6:00 per mile pace group? i can’t imagine a good reason (though there may be one and if so please forgive me and explain it to me). all i know is that they clogged up the beginning of the bock run and slowed down my first 2 miles.

here are my mile breaks:

  • mile 1 – 9:42
  • mile 2 – 9:29
  • mile 3 – 9:20
  • mile 4 – 9:07
  • mile 5 – 8:43

notice how every mile was faster? i tend to think this is because of all the time i ended up being stuck behind walkers in the first two miles. this happened more times than i care to remember.

please don’t think that i am down on people walking races. i am not. i think it is great for people to walk races. just start at a reasonable part of the pack. i figured i would run around 9:45 per mile so i started at the 10:00 per mile pace group. when i went faster it didn’t cause anyone any trouble. people, just pick an appropriate spot in the pack people. come on!

SIDE NOTE – i think my tv is going to begin thinking that we are british because of all the bbc tv series pam has been watching recently. eat least it is fun to watch the guys fight in these british dramas. every argument seems to end with someone saying sternly “i say good day to you sir.” if it continues that say even louder “i said good day sir!” i think i will start doing this.

eric’s craigslist discussion

a friend of mine, eric g, is presently in discussions with a guy in wausau who wants to sell/trade his air guitar on craigslist. the whole thing has made me laugh so i thought i would, with his permission, share it here.

the original craigslist add reads:

selling a vintage, mint condition air guitar. has served faithfully as the backup to several world famous touring rigs. sweet low action, and really screams on the higher frets and insane sustain, as demonstrated recently on a journey tribute concert. don’t settle for less, get the best, and impress your girl.

make an offer, will also consider trade for barefoot water skis.

eric’s initial response was:

i saw your posting on craigslist for the air guitar.  i will trade you three baby unicorns.  trust me, it’s a good deal.  their mother was a champion snipe chaser and their father could jump a dozen rainbows without breaking a sweat.  let me know if this deal works for you and we can meet up.  if you want to check out the unicorns, my address is 1234 yellowbrick rd..  they can usually be found frolicking with the gnomes in the pasture.
sincerely,
eric

the person behind the listing responded with:

eric, thanks for your interesting offer.  i will google this ‘yellow road’ you speak of and see what type of neighborhood it is you have raised these unicorns in before deciding, however i have had poor experiences in the past with gnomes, so the fact they have frolicked concerns me.  will be in touch yesterday.  thx again.

(personal note here – who can blame this guy for worrying about the bad influence of gnomes. they are notorious for leading unicorns down the wrong path.)

and eric responded back with:

i could also offer a guided hodag hunt instead of the unicorn colts if that would be more desirable.

(personal note here – for those of you who aren’t familiar with hodags … well you obviously haven’t lived in wisconsin)

though i would never tell this to the guy trying to sell/trade the air guitar i really hope eric gets this air guitar and gets rid of his juvenile unicorns. i’m a little tired of the damage his unicorns are doing around town. the gnomes have really messed the unicorns up.

just finished talking with the mayor

i just finished talking with mayor halverson over coffee at emy j’s. it was a very enjoyable conversation that i learned a good bit from but probably best of all was directed to other people to talk with. i’ll write about the conversation tonight or tomorrow morning.

the “over 40” league

DSC_0037-2

thanks to one of pam’s co-workers i am now a part of the stevens point “over 40” basketball league. i’m doing this for a few different reasons.

  • its another way to exercise and that is good.
  • i really like playing basketball, which is odd since i played football for most of the time i was growing up.
  • i need/want to meet new people in the community, which is why i hang out at emy j’s so much, walk my dogs at the dog park, and curl. this is another opportunity to meet people outside of tapestry.

the last reason is why i am playing in the stevens point “over 40” league instead of playing in the church “pick up” games that i have been often asked to join. it is awfully nice of the people at these churches to invite me to play basketball with them but i would rather be outside of the church trying to live out and share the good news of JESUS rather than trying to share it inside the church.  obviously, i have nothing against “pick up” games among CHRISTians. i think the time together is most likely wonderful. my issue is that it seems that far too often the church stays within the church subculture.

another example of this is a conversation i recently had with a ministerial friend. he told me about a web service called onthecity.org that the church he is a part of has started using. he said they were using it because it enables them to do things “just like facebook.” i didn’t understand this. why would i need a religious social network that would work “just like facebook”? why not just use facebook? why separate and ghetto ourselves off? why have a church social network when we can do church out in the public for all to see?

it seems far too common in the church for believers to hole ourselves off in protective shells and then ask those who don’t believe in our MESSIAH to come and join us in our safe areas rather than going out into our communities and living out our faith in JESUS as the PRINCE OF PEACE for all the see. so that is part of why i am playing in the city “over 40” league where every now and then i hear someone shout an obscenity when they miss a shot, rather than just mumbling it under their breath while playing in a church gym. 🙂

DSC_0031-2SIDE NOTE – i bought 3 signs at the weekly uwsp surplus sale for $1 each. i’m painting tapestry on them for church use (like temporary-use median signs on the road). with the $3 cost of the paint pen that i bought to letter the sign this means that i will have spent $6 total for three signs. booyah.

SIDE SIDE NOTE – i think that pam likes me playing in the “over 40” league just because she enjoys me hobbling around after each game. my pain is her entertainment.

sunday night ritual

watching “the walking dead” as wind down entertainment on a sunday night is perfect. i do love zombie stories and “the walking dead” is a good one to watch each week after a long sunday (i filled in for a friend this morning preaching at fellowship baptist church in waupaca).

articles on creativity

the saints

the psyblog has an interesting series of post on creativity. they are well worth the time it takes to read them. i particularly enjoyed the “dark side of creativity” and “why people fear creative ideas” because it’s not often that you see anyone talk about the negative side of creativity.  here’s one example from the article “why people fear creative ideas”:

people deal with the disconnect by saying one thing, "creativity is good, we want more of it!" but actually rejecting creative ideas for being impractical.

good stuff.

thule responded

another aside for the day. kathy from thule responded to my post on installing the roof rack on fred the sentra. i really appreciate the fact that thule responded. it speaks a lot to who they are as a company. it would have been pretty easy for them to completely ignore my complaint. after all i’m a nobody with a blog that basically only my parents read. i am sure that my little post wasn’t a major public relations scandal for them that had to be handled for the good of the company. so i appreciate kathy of thule taking time to respond to my complaint and it will be remembered by me when i consider future purchases.

the mayor has called

just a quick aside here concerning my post from a couple of days ago “mr. mayor, i have a question for you.” the mayor’s assistant called today to setup a time for us to have coffee. so i’ll be asking the mayor my questions in a week and a half. actually i’ve already forwarded my questions to him so he can think about them. i’ll ask his permission to post how he answers the questions.

i feel like i know a decent amount about the point area (after all, it is difficult to love a city if you don’t really know the city) but i am really looking forward to the new directions this conversation might lead to.

a little bit of work on a saturday

saloon doors

i know this will hurt some of you but the saloon doors on the mudroom bathroom is officially done for now. we’ve been meaning to replace these for a while and have finally gotten around to it. pam will paint the doors in the next few days. pam has had this on my “honey do” list for quite some time. i can’t believe it took me this long to get to replacing the doors. when you visit our home in the future you want have to use the bathroom in a room where the door is open on the bottom and the top.

i also just finished replacing the rear deck speakers in fred. the factory speakers were trashed after 20 years of use. i replaced the front speakers with planet audio 4×6’s and the rear speakers with kicker d65 6.5’s. both of these speakers are inexpensive. the planet audio speakers sound nice (i put them in earlier during a lunch break) but the kicker speakers sound amazing. i have the option of putting 6.5 speakers in the front (the 4x6s fit into a 6.5” metal tray that fit into the door – not sure why nissan did this but it works out well for me) and i might replace the 4x6s later just because the kicker speakers sound so amazing.
