taking notes

since i know that some of my former adolescent & college kids read this blog i figure i’ll place this helpful article up for everyone who has to take notes every now and then. lifehacker referenced it but the original article on taking notes was posted on lifehack. here’s the article. it’s a great piece on the purpose of notes and what you should actually write down (and thus what you should not write down).

don't be a CHRISTian

this is the latest teaching series at vintage faith church. obviously i haven’t heard the series so i can’t really say anything about it BUT i do want to say that i love the concept. if dan kimball’s execution of the series is as good as the concept then i would bet it is a butt kicking teaching series.

why can't we have this?

this is a video that jason kottke posted. it’s a japanese gameshow where people try to jump hurdles while running on treadmills. this is fine entertainment.

bible up

while i am watching “the natural” with my oldest son i thought i would send out a big “thank you” to an anonymous giver. today i received to boxes of niv bibles that someone sent for tapestry. i don’t know who did it but i really appreciate it. there have been several people who have made contributions to tapestry and in addition to them parkview baptist church gave us some older equipment for us to use. i really appreciate these contributions.

the one today came at a great time because i had a somewhat depressing day. my goal today was to make a lot of contacts that i could move forward on over the next week or so. i’ve been trying to talk to as many of the local pastors as i could to learn from them what has been done before in the area. so i placed as many calls as i could and emailed as many addresses as i could find.

nada.

i wasn’t able to get through to anybody today. it was nobody’s fault. i just wasn’t able to reach people during the times they were reachable. the problem for me was that it was somewhat disheartening. i know i’ve only been doing this a month but there are moments were i think the church is going to blossom in a matter of seconds. then there are other days where i wonder what type of mess i have gotten my family into. after making zero contacts all morning i felt a little bit more of the former. so i decided to jump out of the house for a little while. i ran around town, prayed some, and got a diet coke (a good trio for my soul). when i got back to the house there were the bibles.

perfect timing. thanks.

several of you have had perfect timing and i truly appreciate it.

google calendar sms

as i have said before i really like google calendar. i really like the ability to subscribe to multiple calendars, if i desire allow other people to subscribe to my calendar, and receive text message (sms) reminders sent to my cell phone. today i discovered gvent, which allows me to add events to my calendar and check my schedule for the day all via text messages. it’s a nice thing.

i would agree with that

i found this quote in the ed stezer book i am presently reading (“planting new churches in a postmodern age“):

the same can be said for north american postmoderns. churches need to be planted in buckhead (metro atlanta), marin county (san francisco), and at the university of wisconsin.

i think that sounds like a great idea.

so what does a church planter do?

i have no idea!

but i can tell you what i am doing in the name of church planting … meeting as many people as i possibly can. this means going to kiwanis meetings, going out to uwsp faculty get togethers, eating lunch with people and today it meant joining a bi-weekly pickup basketball game with a group uwsp faculty, alumni, and students. it may not sound like much but my body is telling me that it was a big deal. i haven’t seriously played basketball in years. yes, i play a little bit of basketball every year when we go to nicaragua and do our “basketball clinic” but anyone whose ever seen that knows it involves very little serious play. this group plays a good bit better than the nicaraguans (though the nicaraguans kick serious butt in soccer). it was a lot of fun. of course, i’m in very serious “old age” soreness and pain at this moment. nobody ever told me feeling like this was a part of planting a church.

cheap & local

the family and i were thrilled sunday when we tried the plover express drive thru. the whole family was fed with good but cheap food for less than $13. that’s hard to beat. even better than being cheap was the fact that it is local. eating at a burger king or heaven forbid a mcdonald’s is okay when you’re traveling but otherwise the terrell family goal is to eat at local fast food joints whenever the fast food craving hits us. we’ve always been able to find local places that were amazing. it’s nice to know that we’ve already found a good local place for filling up on our grease levels.
