tapestry needs

right now the launch team is praying over a date to begin the public services of tapestry. i can’t really say the date we think we are being led to until we’ve all reached that point. i can say that it is soon enough that i need to start buying some equipment over the next several months. since, many, if not most, of you are experts on some of the equipment i need to buy i thought i might look for some of your opinions. so here’s the list of what i will need to buy in the next several months and what i am thinking of spending.

  • a windows based laptop – i have never bought a windows based laptop and therefore i know next to nothing concerning what i should look for. i’m hoping to spend less than a grand on this. it’s primary purpose will be for projection (a.k.a. powerpoint and mediashout) but i would like to be able to use it for portable video editing. it needs to be rugged and easy to use. any thoughts?
  • a digital camcorder – i haven’t bought a digital camcorder in five years and many things have changed. i don’t need a professional level camera but video will be pretty important so a good quality camera would be nice.
  • powered pa speakers – my research thus far has lead me to qsc hpr 122i’s. i’m open to other ideas if anyone knows something better for the price (around $1,500).

of course, i also have the boring stuff to buy (i.e. tables, chairs, coffee makers, etc.) so if anyone has any suggestions on a place to get good stuff at inexpensive prices that would be cool.

btw, thanks to the many wonderful people who have contributed to the point that we have money to buy these things for tapestry.

photo document an event

lifehacker posted concerning photographically documenting your party and the article had several very cool ideas. i’ll probably steal some of these for when we launch tapestry but i wish i had known about them when i was doing youth ministry. these things have “lock-in” and “retreat” written all over them.

the three suggestions they have are:

  1. time elapsed webcam video
  2. computer photo both photos
  3. live party slideshow via eye-fi card

i think these things would be eaten up at a lock-in.

d. min essay

as i posted earlier i am in the process of apply to new orleans seminary to work on a doctor of ministry degree. as a part of the application process i have to write an autobiographical essay which consists of:

  • a brief statement of conversion and call – 1 page
  • a brief description and evaluation of ministry experience – 2-3 pages
  • discussion of philosophy of ministry – 2-4 pages
  • a brief analysis of personality and leadership style 2-3 pages
  • a discussion of 3 influential books (apart from the Bible) read in the past three years – 2-3 pages
  • goals for personal and professional development – 1 page

so i’m working on this essay this week. i’m enthralled by the idea of electronic collaboration within then church and so my hope is to try and make this a collaborative effort. the only way i know to do that at this point is to set the file up as a google document and encourage people to help me edit it (once it’s written because right now there isn’t much that is written). you can view the document here. if you are interested in having access to edit the document please just email me at my name @gmail.com and i’ll add you to the editors. also if you think of another way that the essay could be even more collaborative please send that to me. i’m up for trying pretty much anything.

btw, since the document has to be done in the style of ole’ kate and i don’t know how to do such a thing in google documents, i will merely be using google docs to type out the meat of the essay and then transfering it to micro$oft word or open office for the actual formatting. this means the google document is a very incomplete document.

MAJORLY IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE
this essay is being written to a faith based institution and therefore i’ll be using the language of the evangelical subculture. hopefully i don’t usually talk like this but i understand what they are asking for and i am very afraid that they will not understand what i am trying to convey unless i describe it within evangelical language. thanks to a few youth laughing at me i have worked at trying to avoid such blatantly “churchy” language. i’ll have to use some of that language within this essay. once, i’m in the program they’ll know who i am and understand what i am trying to say. for now i need to speak in the language they will understand.

web space

if you’re like me you need a little storage space on the web every now and then. i usually use a directory on the tapestry website for doing this. not everyone has that option. today lifehacker posted about windows sky drive that allows you 5 gigs of space for data. i’m not usually the biggest micro$oft fan but i am trying this out. i’ve tried box.net, another data storage facility, but i decided that i preferred my directory on the tapestry website. i’m intrigued by the rss option that sky drive offers and thus i’m going to give it a shot (in spite of it being micro$oft). the rss feature could come in handy with digital stuff for tapestry.

of course, i’ll probably swap to google’s version once they have one.

i love lifehacker

if you don’t have lifehacker on your rss reader then your are missing some incredible things. i always pick up the best ideas from them. today they posted about email addresses that automatically convert your attachments for you. koolwire had four of the addresses. it’s so cool. you email your document to koolwire and it emails the pdf file back to you. no registration required. now i may grow to hate this later (i have a little fear that it’s just a way of getting my email address for throwing spam at me) but right now i love it.

somtimes i smile to myself

first, let me say “thanks” to those of you who told me that the blog is working and viewable for you. the blog apparently works for everyone except the austins. i believe that this is my blog protecting me from some evil that the austins are trying to perpetrate against me. so be warned austins my loyal blog has seen through your evil plans and will continue to prevent you from working against me. turn from your evil ways my peruvian friends.

second, it’s probably strange but as i walk my dogs i find myself daydreaming about what tapestry might be. i do this alot. i walk the dogs and think about what a service produced by the whole community of faith could be like or how we could be involved within the community or seeing people come to CHRIST and have their lives changed or finding new ways to fight for GOD’s justice within our community and the world. it always makes me smile. the problem with this is that as i am daydreaming i don’t do the greatest job of paying attention to what is happening around me. this is why tonight while wearing a dopey smile on my face i nearly walked into another person heading the opposite direction. still, i was happy with my little dream of being a progressive, evangelical church.

SIDE NOTE – pam and i have fallen in love with ingrid michaelson’s song “the way i am.” thank you old navy commercial.

SIDE SIDE NOTE – “the office” is about to come on. woohoo.

  • guess what i have flaws … occasionally i hit someone with my car.
  • “she looks awful.” “she always looks like that. it’s not my fault.”
  • i have to be liked, but it’s not a compulsive thing like my need to be praised.
  • she’s in a better place. … actually the place that she’s in is the freezer.
  • it’s up to me to get rid of the curse. i’m not superstitious but i am a little stitious.
  • with the electricity we are using to keep meredith alive we could power a small fan for two days. you tell me what is most ethical.
  • maybe there’s some type of monster. like a creature with the body of a walrus and the head of a sea lion.
  • is there a GOD? if not then what are all these churches for? and WHO is JESUS’s DAD?
  • a woman shouldn’t have to be hit by a car to find out she may have rabies, but that is where we are and it frustrates me.
  • i’m petrified of nipple chaffing. once it starts it becomes a vicious circle. – pam has decided that at the next road race i participate in i will be wearing a t-shirt with this quote on it
  • european offices are naked all the time.
  • i know a great taxidermists. we could have her stuffed. well actually he’s not great but he’s pretty good.

SIDE SIDE SIDE NOTE – montana, our female basset, is snoring at this moment like an 80 year 400 pound man.

problems with the blog?

hey guys & girls. our great friends the austins emailed today to say that they were still able to read this blog through bloglines they have not been able to actually visit the blog (I’m thinking this should be read as “comment”) for about a week. i can visit and view the blog so i’m not sure what’s wrong. i was wondering if anyone else had been having a problem viewing the blog. obviously, if you have a problem viewing the blog you will not be able to comment so you could just email me instead (robert[dot]terrell [at] gmail[dot]com).
