youth ministry advertising

i don’t do this much but i figure i’ll post some advertisements for the youth ministry. here’s what is coming up within the youth ministry.

  • the feminar is coming up february 4th & 5th – this is a “girls only” lock-in. you’ll study GOD’s word and do “girlie” things that i have no idea about. you’ve got to be a girl to come to the feminar.
  • the disciplenow is coming up march 11th -13th – the disciplenow is where we separate into groups of 10 to 12 for the weekend and the go to homes to spend the weekend studying GOD’s word. each night we’ll come together for worship that will be lead by ten shekel shirt and andy neely. it will be a great weekend – it’s always a great weekend. everyone is welcome to come to the disciplenow.
  • beautiful feet mission trip is coming up march 31st – april 3rd – each year we go to the beautiful feet church of fort worth, texas and join them in their ministry to bring justice to the homeless of fort worth. you have to be in the 9th grade or above to go on this trip. i love going.

this ends our public service announcement.

i need your shoes

i need your shoes.

well not really any old shoes. i need specific shoes. you see this is not a shoe collection or gathering. nope this is an act of worship. i need shoes that you were wearing when you experienced GOD in a significant manner. it could be that you were wearing those shoes during an incredible moment of worship, or maybe when you felt completely alone and didn’t even feel GOD’s presence yet still you knew HE was there, or maybe you were wearing those shoes when you felt HIS comfort. it doesn’t matter what the story involves as long an experience of GOD is at the center of it. if the shoes weren’t worn by you during an experience with the LORD then i will gladly give them to the salvation army for you but i don’t need them for this worship service. it’s the stories that are most important.

if you have shoes that fit the above category and wouldn’t mind giving them to me for a worship service in march i would greatly appreciate it. i need the shoes and the story of the experience. after we use the shoes within the worship service we will take them with us on our beautiful feet mission trip so other people can experience GOD in those same shoes.

anyways, thanks!

the sabbath retreat

francis-cookingthis past weekend i took some of our 11th & 12th graders to lake rosemound for an experiment in youth ministry. we had our first ever “sabbath”. in scripture GOD commands that we “sabbath” (or rest) “unto HIM”. we are supposed to stop and rest not just because we need to but also because it is a way of saying that we trust in GOD. resting is hard because we would rather trust our own hands and abilities than trust in a GOD WHO sometimes says “stop working”.

yet american culture is one in which work is worshipped. we love to work. adults and students love to work. so resting, really resting and not just swapping to working on something else, is difficult for us. we feel guilty if we are not doing something. so we ignore our physical, emotional, and spiritual need to rest. if we ever actually do take time off from the “rat race” that is going on around us we turn that time off into a time in which we work on other things. just so we will stay busy.

so the “sabbath” was about resting. we spent allot of time in silence, we spent allot of time doing nothing, we spent allot of time focused on only one passage of scripture and putting ourselves into that scripture. in other words we had a “sabbath”. truthfully it was not easy. it’s really easy to just do something, not really because anything needs to be done, but rather because we feel the need to do something, anything to keep from really being still.

it was a great weekend.

new website design

i recently figured out how to how to use blogger to continually post updates on the website. this has some incredible advantages, suc as:

  • easy web-based updates from anywhere – i presently really need to be at my church computer in order to update the website or i have to use a test editor which takes me awhile to do.
  • an rss feed for the website – this means that you can use bloglines or another rss fetcher to automatically “fetch” updates from the website.
  • easy c.s.s. updating so i can change the look of the website easily.
  • comments – you can now place your own comments on pages of the website.

so if you haven’t looked at the youth ministry website you might want to do so.

youth ministry forum

the youth ministry forum has kind of crashed – i say kind of crashed because something has happened to the “index.php” file which is what displays when you go to the site. everything else works fine – you can actually still post on the forum you just can’t see the main page. i’ve got to find an older copy of the index.php file and then update it a little. this will probably be done between now and thursday. so for the inconvenience. i’m not real sure why the one file would be injured and the others seem to be okay.

NEWSFLASH – it’s back up now. i’m not really sure why it was down in the first place. yet for now it is working again. i may have to talk with ipowerweb (the company that is hosting the parkview youth ministry website. i’ve been having problems with the stats for awhile (sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t) and now this. i don’t think we were hacked. instead it looks like a few files were messed up or deleted. i’m not sure but i’m going to play a little closer attention for awhile.

flickr group

chuck e cheese

i’ve set up a flickr group for pictures from those involved within the view. all you have to do is join flickr (which is free for small photo uploads) and then tell me what your username is. i’ll then invite you to be a part of the group – it’s a public group that anyone can view but you have to be invited to join. if you take pictures i would love to have a chance see your pictures and talk about them.

you can view the group by clicking HERE.

i would recommend that if you join flickr and add photos that you add lower resolution photos. you only get ten megs of transfer space a month for the free account and that gets eaten up quickly with print quality photos. we’ll be adding more pictures to the group every now and then.

A SIDE NOTE – i have nine gmail invitations for anyone who is interested. gmail is google’s webmail system that has several advantages over the other free email services. of course, since it is in beta right now in order to get gmail you have to have an invitation from someone who already has it. so if you would like an invitation email me at robert.terrell AT gmail.com.

sickness, potatoes, and slapping

the terrell family weekend of sickness appears to be over – finally. pam feels better after hibernating for the weekend. the boys seem to be doing better and thus far none of the animals appear to be sick. i think we may have made it through our first winter family cold.

sunday after church i just so happened to have the potato cannon in my truck and after lunch i found out that the austins’ kids had never seen a potato cannon in operation. that was a good enough reason for me to pull it out so we took it out at the church and began firing. i swear that thing shoots further and further every time i use it. it was easily going 400 feet this time.

presently i am at cc’s coffee house waiting for our weekly youth ministry staff meeting. earlier while waiting a former youth minister walked up and started talking to me. this guy always talks TO me and never WITH me. this time he was busy talking about how “it’s all about relationships”. a statement i would agree with. yet, it’s hard to have a relationship or friendship with someone who is so busy talking AT you that they can never talk WITH you.

so i slapped him. that’s right i hauled off and popped him right across the face.

the problem is that this slap merely occurred in my mind. while he continued to rattle off i thought of slapping him and then watching how he would respond. he didn’t seem to mind that i wasn’t really paying attention to what he was saying. or maybe he didn’t notice because he was too busy talking to realize that i was lost in my own world of thought. all i know is that imagining to slap him sure did make his diatribe go by quickly.

the asian tsunami – virtual prayer room

messy CHRISTian has set up a virtual prayer room on his blog. don’t be surprised if someone you know has been effected by the catastrophe. as followers of CHRIST we have to be involved in lifting up our brothers and sisters in prayer. remember scripture says when one part of the body of CHRIST hurts then all of the body should hurt. take care of your asian brothers and sisters by spending some time lifting them up to the FATHER.

the view – wednesday, december 29, 2004

i just wanted to give everyone a reminder that we WILL have the view tomorrow night, wednesday, december 29, 2004 @ 6:00 till 7:15 p.m. just like we always do. remember that it is a very rare night ndeed when we cancel the view. we even continued the view during the two hurricanes we had two wednesdays in a row during 2002 (isidore and lili. if we aren’t going to cancel the service for a hurricane then we definitely aren’t going to cancel the view just because schools are out or it’s the week of a holiday. GOD’s worship should never be canceled.
