“woven together in CHRIST” wallpaper

wtic

i “needed” a new deskptop wallpaper for my computer so i created this today while talking with the copywrite guy for the radio stations (94.7fm, 95.5fm, & 99.9fm) we are going to run tapestry launch ads on (by the way the copywriter was quite cool to talk with). since it costs me nothing to do this i’m placing the wallpaper up on the blog for anyone who wants it. if you need a reminder to pray for tapestry please grab the wallpaper. if you like the color green please grab it. if you’ve always wanted an image that interlocked “woven” and “in”, then grab it. you probably get the picture by now (no pun intended)

SIDE NOTE – talking with the marketing agent and the copywriter for the radio stations i realized something. i have been trying desperately trying to avoid some of the older catch phrases we use within the church culture, but the problem is that i’ve ended up jut using some of the newer catch phrases. by doing this i’ve actually made the message a little harder to understand. “holistic” and “missional” are great words but they were pretty much meaningless in my conversations today. in trying to convey to the marketing manager that our group believes that everyone is at a different part of their journey of faith and that churches should encourage that, i apparently conveyed to her that every religion was a way to GOD and all you had to do was choose your own path. woah! not what i meant to get across at all.

the experience was great. i have to unlearn some of the newer “church” words and simmer everything down to some easy to understand summaries. i wish i could get someone to critic my language and vocabulary once a quarter just to make sure that i am communicating clearly. that is excluding from my accent of course. that’s not leaving anytime soon.

two great things

IMG_0603

this afternoon i got to do two things i love: 1)talk with someone concerning youth ministry, and 2)fish for smallmouth bass. josh is helping to start the youth ministry at tapestry’s sponsoring church, fellowship church in waupaca. when he asked if we could get together and talk about youth ministry i asked if we could do it while fishing (i haven’t been in three weeks so i was going through the d.t.’s). it made for a great afternoon. i have no doubt that josh is going to do great in youth ministry because he has a wonderful heart.

SIDE NOTE – since i no longer have a study all my books are disorganized in a ton of boxes. therefore, if anyone has a spare copy of “the first two years of youth ministry” by doug fields (which i think is the best starting youth ministry book around – even though i’m not a purpose driven guy) i know someone who could put it to good use. actually if you want to get frid of any youth ministry books let me know. email me and i’ll connect you with josh.

IMG_0605SIDE SIDE NOTE – i caught this 22” catfish on a shallow running shad rap.  the fish bite all the way through the bottom inch of balsa wood that makes up the lure’s body. the only reason i caught the fish was because the because the metal of the eye transfers up the body of the lure to the front of the lure. that’s the first time that’s every happened to me.

SIDE SIDE SIDE NOTE – andy lickel (the uwsp intervarsity campus minister) was also out on the river and that guy can catch some fish. josh and i caught out share but if it had been a competition andy would have smoked us both. i don’t know how he does it.

tapestry nicaragua '08

the receipt for water at kilumbo
we are back from nicaragua and my stomach is slowly but surely surviving my swap from nicaraguan to american food (major food changes always throw me off – much like my dogs). as always there is way too many amazing things for me to post them all. therefore, i will only post a few.

  1. the baltadanos are incredible – they are my friends and they are the ones doing all the cool ministry down there. we anglos get to work along side them and it is a privilege to do so.
  2. tapestry is incredible – i loved working and hanging with our group. they did amazing stuff and came up with some great new ideas. it is so cool planting a church with these guys and girls.
  3. we got to hook kilumbo up with water – the families that used to live in the dump have been moved 45 minutes away to an area called kilumbo. this is a mixed blessing. the positive side is that the kids no longer live int he dump. the negative side is their parents still have to survive off scavenging from the dump and that is a 45 minute walk away. along with this they didn’t have any running water and were getting sick constantly. you can see a photo of their water cistern here. pam found out about this and then as a group we were able to get them connected to clean water. that’s what the above photo is about. it’s the receipt from having them connected. that receipt will be framed and become a part of tapestry worship. there is something just plain cool about bringing fresh water to people while you are talking about the living water of JESUS.
  4. things are improving but we still have miles to go – this was my sixth year down there and significant improvements have happened in some areas. yet, there is still so much that can be done. tapestry is committed to kilumbo (which is a part of diriamaba). we are going to see life there improve. i am more and more convinced that with the baltadanos we can be a part of GOD doing something amazing.
  5. we suck at soccer (a.k.a football) – we always get our butts kicked. i will same that the diriagen game (the local professional team) we saw down there was incredible.

i’ll post more later but i need to leave emy j’s now and head home.

SIDE NOTE – i just finished talking with a local radio station’s ad guy and i think it is going to be possible for tapestry to buy some ad time on that station before we launch. of course, this is not a CHRISTian station because it would not be in our character to advertise to church people. we’ll be the only church advertising on their station (at least for the short time we advertise). we’re talking about doing an ad that is a cross between a monster truck rally and a church opening ad. just imagine “SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!” it should be fun. 🙂

pregnancy pact

juno

i saw this on kottke a little earlier.

a group of teen girls in a massachusetts city made a pack to get pregnant and raise their children together. right now there are 17 girls, most of whom are below the age of 16, that apparently became pregnant on purpose. in desperation one of the girls found a 24 year old homeless man to get her pregnant. the school authorities and parents are trying to figure out how to handle this. i love one student’s answer to the school doctor and nurse’s decision to giving out contraceptives as a means of preventing this (which i don’t personally have an issue with but that’s for a different post). the student said “that won’t do much to solve the issue of teens wanting to get pregnant.”

in my opinion, the one of the saddest things from the article is the reasons the girls are getting pregnant. one of the teen mom’s said “they’re so excited to finally have someone to love them unconditionally” but then went on to explain “it’s hard to feel loved when an infant is screaming to be fed at 3 a.m.” first it’s sad that these girls feel that they’ve never been loved unconditionally. secondly, it’s sad that they want to have a child just to meet their own needs for love. anybody whose had kids knows that they are inherently selfish. having a child is no something from which you receive a ton of unconditional love, instead its a situation where hopefully you learn to love someone else as unconditionally as possible. you learn to love a child when he is screaming at you, or throwing a tantrum, or being rebellious. hopefully you learn to express this love in a manner that reminds the child that she is loved but at the same time teaches her that your love wants to push her into becoming a better human.

these girls are probably in for a rude awakening.

young love

i’m in baton rouge at the moment and right now i am officiating the wedding ceremony for haley fletcher & john gieselmann. i couldn’t be more happy to be a part of something. they are a great young couple an while i can’t predict the future (i failed my courses on prophecy in seminary) and anything is possible i feel very good about their future. they are starting things off in the best way possible.

actually there are four of “my” kids that have been married recently or are getting married recently and i am very proud of all of them. kate & justin smith were married last week and sarah fuselier is getting married in july (though for some reason i was convinced it was next week). they are all great kids and i am proud to have been a part of their lives.

user dependence?

this was not a fun day in regards to my interaction with certain industries’ user friendliness. first, i spent a decent part of my morning visiting a new vet (oh how i miss our vet in baton rouge). our oldest cat has high blood pressure and our oldest dog needed some vaccinations. it wasn’t a very cool visit. the pain didn’t come from either one of the pets being sick, but instead the pain came from the dealing with a vet tech whose job is apparently to try and “up sale” everybody you walks in the door. i actually spent more time talking with the tech trying to sell me additional and more expensive services, than i did with the vet explaining how my pets are doing. the vet tech wanted me to get a more expensive heart worm test than the one that is usually done. why? because it picks up an additional disease. when i asked what the treatment would be if one of my dogs was found with the disease her response was that the vast majority of time they don’t do anything. why would i want to get a test that would show me something that we then aren’t going to do anything about? when i asked for a prescription script for my dogs’ heartworm medicine she tried to convince me out of that because the drug companies warranty doesn’t work when the drugs are bought online. i told her that every real product produced had < ahref="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Implied_warranty#Fitness_for_a_particular_purpose">an implied warranty of fitness for a particular purpose and that’s all i would need. that’s when she responded with “well we’ll price match their price.” great, why didn’t you tell me that sooner rather than just trying to scare me with a lame treat? anyhow, it wasn’t a fun trip to the vet.

in the afternoon had my second non-user friendly experience. the coolant crossover hose on my mazda sprung a leak. the cross over house is a 5″ long hose that connects two metal fitting that are approximately 1″ apart from each other. it’s not a big deal to replace other than it was placed in a position that is nigh impossible to reach. since, i know that about half of a car’s design is making sure that a good number of it’s parts will have to be replaced at appropriate times you would think that cars would be a little easier for the non mechanic to work on. of course, the goal is for non-mechanics not to be able to work on the cars. instead, they want everyone to have to come in and pay for a dealer mechanic to replace the 5″ hose and other various parts. maintenance on our vehicles is a great source of income only if people aren’t able to work on their cars by themselves. so the car manufactures make the cars impossible to work on. it drives me nuts.

anyhow, these two experiences got me to thinking (in addition to just getting me mad). i wonder how often within church we inadvertently try to force people to have to rely on us? i would look at the vet and the car manufacture as allies if i felt like they were trying to help me rather than just get me to have to depend upon them more and more. shouldn’t the church work on helping people to live out the faith outside the walls of the church? it seems like we sometimes teaching people that our job is to provide the worship opportunities and their job is just to come to them. shouldn’t we be teaching people how to worship not only in the church but to worship in all of life? shouldn’t we be teaching people how to serve within our communities and neighborhoods instead of just how to serve within the church? sometimes it seems like we are teaching people that we’ll provide the mission trips and then they can serve.

we should be helping people to live out the faith when their within the church building and even more importantly outside of it. i believe the term for this is holistic – faith in JESUS effects everything we do and are. the church should be a sending and training area. we should be helping people to be dependent upon JESUS rather than more and more dependent upon an institution. then we would be people’s allies in their walk with CHRIST.

parkview has a new one

from what i’ve been told by people i love in baton rouge parkview has a new youth minister. i don’t know the guy but i love and respect the people on the youth minister search committee and therefore i’m sure that he must be a great guy for them to have settled on him. anyhow, back in november i posted concerning how i would greet the new youth minister and just in case there is anyone from parkview who still reads this blog (i usually bore people away from the blog within a few weeks so i doubt that anyone has stuck with it) i thought i would repost a link to it. good times are ahead for the youth ministry of parkview. join the new youth minister in realizing how the kingdom of GOD can be lived out in baton rouge.

here’s the post.

movie night

i have a wonderful friend who is trying to do a movie night for a youth ministry that i love very much. she asked me for my opinion on what to show. unfortunately i have a terrible track record with movie nights. almost everyone i have ever done has been a dismal affair. my thoughts now are to just try and get a movie that everyone knows and will enjoy quoting and laughing at together. still i’m the worse source of information ever on movie nights. i know and respect some of y’all immensely for your youth ministry prowess. do any of you have any great suggestions for what movie they should watch or what things they should do?

photo document an event

lifehacker posted concerning photographically documenting your party and the article had several very cool ideas. i’ll probably steal some of these for when we launch tapestry but i wish i had known about them when i was doing youth ministry. these things have “lock-in” and “retreat” written all over them.

the three suggestions they have are:

  1. time elapsed webcam video
  2. computer photo both photos
  3. live party slideshow via eye-fi card

i think these things would be eaten up at a lock-in.

finally someone summarizes my feelings on lock-ins

ht len

as a youth minister i hated lock-ins. i loved retreats but i HATED lock-ins.
