google cloud connect

i have been a big fan of google docs for quite sometime. we at tapestry have used the collaborative nature of of google docs for many projects. we used it for the development of our church constitution and we are using it right now in a sermon preparation project. yesterday i found out about google cloud connect which is a plugin that allows you to work in microsoft office products over the google cloud. i’m going to be trying this over the next few weeks to see how it works.

louis theroux

louis

today while eating lunch I discovered louis theroux. how have a missed this guy? he’s television documentaries (at least the two i watched during lunch) seem to be real gems. today i watched “the most hated family in america” about the VERY screwed up church westboro baptist and part of his “weird weekend” episode on black nationalism. they were both wonderful explorations of parts of society that i would never want to be a part of but i still found his time within them fascinating. i’ll be watching more of his work.

pam and i finally watched “the social network” and found it to be a really compelling movie. what a wonderfully told story of success, failure, betrayal, and drive. it was amazing.

the king’s speech

the kings speech

pam and i went to see “the king’s speech” last night and it was amazing. pam wanted to go to it because it is possibly the only movie in history in which one of the main characters is a speech pathologist. i wanted to go to the movie because … well because pam wanted to. i wasn’t super excited about seeing the movie but i knew she was and that was good enough for me.

so i was completely surprised when i ended up loving the movie. it was incredibly good, very entertaining, and once again proved how amazing pam’s profession is. she is part of a field that does incredible stuff and this movie is a very good example of how amazing speech pathology is.

should i be preaching

i’m presently in a pastors’ meeting where the subject being discussed is preaching. while talking about what good preaching is a standard was reached by most of the group. i agree with most of the standard. it was that good preaching was not just about the truth that was spoken but also about the truth that was communicated and understood by those who heard it. i thought it was a pretty good standard and fits in with aristotle’s model of communication (sender – medium – receiver). based on this standard i jokingly threw out "based on this standard i assume ½ the people preaching shouldn’t be preaching during a worship service." everyone in the room thoroughly agreed.

now i’m sitting here trying to figure out which half of the room shouldn’t be preaching. i’m assuming it is the other half of the room while i’m fairly sure they think it is this side. 🙂

recommended for me?

i went to amazon today to look for a resource and was surprised by the books it recommended for me. i really thought the books i read would lead to better recommendations than this. apparently amazon has a different view. here are the book that have been most recently ordered on my account":

i’m not sure how these book equal the above recommendations but i am really disappointed in the books i read because they apparently correlate to trash and photoshop manuals.

i will try to start reading better.

purse vs. sledgehammers

this is awesome. 6 bandits with sledgehammers try to break into a jewelry store but are thwarted by a 70 year old woman with a large purse. it is incredible. this little old lady runs across the street to chase these guys away with her purse.

super bowl gathering

BenRoethlisbergerVsPackers

just a reminder to everyone that instead of tapestry’s normal weekly gathering at washginton elementary school we will be watching the game together at our house (3311 arbor vitae lane). the church will be providing jambalaya and drinks. everyone else is asked to bring a heavy appetizer – you can figure out for yourself how heavy. we’ll do a devotion at 5 p.m. this is the third year that we have done this and it is always a blast.

ahhhh! my phone wallpapers

up until last month our cell phone service have been through alltel. we are no longer with alltel but it is through no choice of our own. instead, alltel sold their central wisconsin contracts to a new regional company, element mobile. the transition has not been easy. i’ve spent about 3 1/2 hours in one of their stores trying to get our old alltel phones to work on element mobile’s system. it never worked and so element mobile finally gave us new phones. it has been a royal headache. our contract ends in august and i’ll be reconsidering who we do business with then.

anyhow, my new phone is the samsung messager and which has a touch screen. i’m a cheap cell phone guy so this is step up for me on phones. this is the first touch screen phone i’ve had. i’m pretty pumped about the fact that i have three desktops on it that can have a different wallpaper on each one. a big thanks to kris legg for posting these wonderful phone wallpapers. i love it when talented people share their gifts with others.

my present search results

search results

the above image is part of a screen shot from the google analytics info i get on this blog. i’m not entirely sure why “my wife is pshycodic (sic)” is the second most common keyword phrase that lead google to my blog but i do know that it makes me laugh. it is all the more confusing to me when by using the blog’s search feature i was able to verify that i have never misspelled psychotic in that manner. i, at least, hope that whoever was searching for info concerning their “pshycodic” (sic) wife found the information they were looking for – help is only a correct search a way. 🙂

wrong car

last week adam and i were out at night because he needed to grab a text book from his school. we stopped at spash (stevens point area senior high) and i waited in the car while he ran inside to get his book. spash is a pretty busy high school and there is always something going on at night. so the building was full of people and the front entrance had a large number of teens standing around waiting for parents to pick them up. from the crowd of waiting adolescents i noticed a young man and girl walking away from the front entrance. he was obviously walking his young lady friend out to the car that was picking her up. don’t ask me how this was obvious to me, it just was. there was something in his manner that seemed to indicate that he was walking her out just to say buy, open the car door for her, and then close it behind her. it’s always nice to see a young man being a gentleman.

i thought it was cute so i watched him them. i continued watching them as they walked straight at adam’s car (which i was sitting in). i thought to myself “i bet they think this is her parents’ car.” i kept thinking this as they continued to walk straight to the car and then opened the passenger side door. that’s when i started laughing and shouted out “i think you have the wrong car.” apparently the girl’s dad has a great sense of humor too because i heard her say “funny dad” right before she looked in and started to scream.

the guy was real embarrassed and apologized before quickly walking away with the girl who had her head in her hands. i just laughed real hard. there is nothing quite as much fun as embarrassing a teen without even having to try.

SIDE NOTE – pam and noah have developed a guilty pleasure of watching ”toddlers and tiaras” which shows some of the culture of child “beauty” pageants. i watched an episode with pam tonight and i have to say that i just don’t get it. i don’t understand how these parents can think these activities are a good thing. i’m sure the show edits some normal stuff out but most of it just seems nuts to me and some seems to cross into the realm of exploitation.
