ye ‘ole exploding whale

this is an moldy oldy but i figure many of your have never seen it and thus i need to complete your internet education and introduce you to the infamous exploding whale. this video shows the “removal” of a 45 ton gray whale that washed up dead on the shores of florence, oregon. things didn’t really go as planned and that’s where the humor comes in. imagine about 20 tons of blubber being blown into the air. a fatty death rained down from the skies. if you have never seen this video you really need to watch it.

sabbath

bells
i just wanted to tell everyone involved within the “sabbath” retreat “thanks.” thanks for being a part of the weekend. i hope it meant as much to you as it did to me. now go get some rest.

southern gospel

i’m not a huge fan of southern gospel music. it just doesn’t “float my boat.” so i wasn’t real thrilled when i found out that we had a southern gospel group singing for the largest part of our worship service today. in a perfect world i would at this point tell you that the group was so good that they changed my mind about southern gospel. they weren’t that good and it didn’t change my mind. still i enjoyed being able to tell that other people were connecting to GOD through the music that was a part of our worship. that was enough for me. i was able to worship GOD through the fact that they were able to connect with GOD through the southern gospel in our service. i love the fact that we have a diverse GOD.

of course, it would be perfectly okay with me if we never had another southern gospel group lead any of our services. 😉

stephen harper is a very bad man

jordan cooper posted this on his blog and it’s so funny i have to pass it on. they’re mock ads from the canadian political ads. they’re so funny that i would vote for someone if they actually ran them.

here’s the add about stephen harper’s dog.

steven harper has a dog.
hitler had a dog.
does stephen harper goose-step while he is walking his dog?
does stephen harper want to kills millions and be the emperor of poland?
we just don’t know.
we’re not kidding.
we just don’t know.
choose your candidate.

it seems like the stuff in these parody ads is about as real as some of our real attack advertisements during our elections.

our church gym

i thought you guys would like to know that our experience at the shelter at southern university as fantastic. it went so well that the shelter manager wanted to change our plans. originally megan kelly was going to organize other people to help on different days. today’s activities with the kids went so well the manager asked that we just make sure that we keep coming. he wants the kids seeing our faces and getting to know the same people. so we’ll keep being a part of their lives.

the jason’s deli experience was just as good. the manager of jason’s deli stop pam, my wife, and told her that they wouldn’t have been able to make the 10,000 meals for the electrical workers if it had not been for our volunteers.

two days down – SIX WEEKS TOL GO. keep on volunteering. we will leave for southern and jason’s tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.

i also figured you would like to know that our church is now playing host to 100 electrical workers. the past three days these guys have been sleeping in their electrical trucks. now they’re sleeping in our gym. when you see them sunday try to encourage them.

we’re okay

we got power back earlier today and i am finally able to post an update on the blog. baton rouge was spared the biggest part of the storm. we had some wind damage (trees downed, shingles blown off, etc.) but very little water damage. the biggest issue we now face is handling the evacuees from new orleans. baton rouge is the closest metro area to new orlean and thus we are getting the lion’s share of the evacuees. it is bringing some amazing ministry opportunities with it. i spent most of my day, after getting my family taken care of, at a couple of the area shelters. we’re taking youth tomorrow to two different locations to help in the recovery effort.

if you would like to see pictures of what we are experiencing from the storm you can view them at my flickr site and you can view my announcements to the youth ministry at my youth ministry blog.

the plan for right now

okay guys & girls there are tons of things around baton rouge that can be done to help in the relief effort for the evacuees from new orleans. for now we (the youth ministry) are going to start with two.

  • first, we are going to work with the children of evacuees staying at the shelter at southern university. there are tons of people at southern and their kids are in need of some encouragement. starting tomorrow we are going to be that encouragement.
  • secondly, jason’s deli is making meals for the rescue workers and they need help putting them together. we are going to be that help.

we will meet at the student center and head to both of these spots. i can’t promise transportation, chaperons, food, or anything else. i’m putting this together as i figure it out. all i can promise is that you will be helping to meet two serious needs. once, we get these needs organized and met we will start on other needs.

we’re okay

for those who have emailed and commented asking if we are okay i am glad to report that the terrell family is fine and dandy. i will try to respond to all the email as i get a chance.

if you a parkview church member and you have been trying to contact anyone on staff through their cell phone just go ahead and give up for a while. all of our phones are dead in the water. try calling home numbers. i am in the book so just look me up in the white pages.

we will have church tonight. we need to spend some time in prayer, worship, and discussion on how to mobilize for some more work with the evacuees. i just came back from working in the shelter in the denham springs high school and the one in the denham springs junior high. there is a large need to do something organized with the kids there. we’ll talk.

katrina

everyone is preparing for hurricane katrina around baton rouge. because of the huge possibility of electricity being out for a few days to two weeks i can not say for sure when i will be able to post again. i’ll try to whenever the storm is gone and the power is working.

just for the fun of it here’s another stupid robertson quote

this one is from the ’92 republican national convention:

[Feminism is] a socialist, anti-family, political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians. —Pat Robertson, 1992 Republican National Convention

i find it interesting again that a supposed CHRISTian leader justifies his problem with an ideology by saying that it hurts “capitalism.” since when should “hurting capitalism” be a reason for a follower of CHRIST to oppose an idea?

come on if you going to supposedly speak out “for” CHRIST please give a better reason than it will hurt capitalism. i can just see JESUS looking down from heaven and saying “why in the world would i be upset about american capitalism being hurt?” heck if it’s going to hurt the really messed up western capitalism that we are experiencing maybe i should really begin to support the feminist allot more.
