the last jeremiah paper

IMG_1328_edited-1

my parents, the only people i am sure actually care about posts being place on this blog, will be thrilled to know that today i mailed in the last paper due from my jeremiah seminar. the reason they will be thrilled is because i will now have enough time to post some new things to the blog (mom – you may now cheer).

SIDE NOTE – if you are interested in the paper you can read it here. it’s not one of my better ones so i wouldn’t really put it on a list of recommended reading.

SIDE SIDE NOTE – anyone interested in going to the q ideas conference with me? if you are a church planter or student i know how you can get a $200 discount. even with the discount it still isn’t cheap, but it is a little better.

SIDE SIDE SIDE NOTE – i spoke at uwsp’s intervarsity chapter last night. i was talking about how scripture records that JESUS is “the way, the truth, and the life” BUT it doesn’t not say that our boxed up versions of HIM are “the way, the truth, and the life.” i thought i had a great idea to display video on each side of the stage showing how to make origami boxes and encouraging the students to make such boxes with paper i provided. the idea was to point out at the end how distracting making the box was from what they had really come there to experience. it would have worked a lot better for one side of the room if i had looked at the settings for the projector on that side of the room. we use that projector for reverse projection at tapestry. unfortunately, this was not reverse projection and thus everything was projected on the wall backwards. this made the instructions, and probably the illustration, useless.

superbowl 43 @ the terrell home

The Delay from Robert Terrell on Vimeo.

since tapestry is a church that only has an evening worship gathering we had an interesting problem with the superbowl. do we just ignore the superbowl and do our regular thing, or do we scrap our regular thing and focus on having a shared experience with the superbowl? it was pretty much a no brainer for us since it’s all about the church not being a building, a place or a program but the people of GOD. therefore, we canceled the normal worship gathering and everyone was invited over the to terrell home for a lot of food (polito’s pizza, brats, jambalaya, and various smaller things). it was a great evening.

perhaps the funniest thing is that we watched the game on two different televisions which had a second to two second delay between them. the whole evening the upstairs group would cheer first while the downstairs group had to figure out if it was a good or bad cheer. the video above was my attempt to catch it.

my ice fishing hat

my ice fishing hat

i know most of you won’t care about this but i love my new ice fishing hat. i think i embarrass my kids by wearing it in public but i love it. what it lacks in style it makes up for in warmth. the hat has a balaclava built into it which makes it even better. it is the warmest thing ever.

a couple of tapestry things i'm pumped about

there are a couple of things in development that tapestry will get to be involved in that i am really excited about. i thought i would share them with you:

  • RESURRECTION SUNDAY!! – i’m pretty pumped about tapestry’s first easter and i am also thrilled with the way that the leadership team has decided to celebrate it. we’re going to practice a little resurrection. for the next several weeks the tapestry family is looking for things that are dead within our community. the reason for this is that that we are going to be a part of JESUS bringing life back into these things (i.e resurrection). that’s what JESUS does and what we believe HE wants HIS people to do … defeat death with life.
  • gigs/alpha groups – gigs (groups investigating GOD) and alpha groups are two different approaches at doing the same thing – providing a question friendly way of people considering the claims of CHRIST. we are looking into doing these. i am very excited about us beginning these.
  • touched twice united – a very cool ministry model through wellness clinics. what i meant by wellness is medical and beyond. we’ll get to be a part of these in stevens point with several other churches.
  • film and faith – evergreen and intervarsity are going to be doing some seminars on film and faith at uwsp and al (the pastor of evergreen) is nice enough to let us in on this. we have some pretty cool pastors in point.

i don’t know when we will get to start each of these (except for easter) but i am thrilled that we will get to start them. tapestry is fun.

mmmmmmmmmm

gumbo

thanks to a little help our friend sharon walters pam has now learned how to make spectacular gumbo. mmmmmmmm, its good. nothing quite like a hot bowl of gumbo on a cold day.

many of you may not know this but i married the best cook i have ever known. i didn’t plan it out. in fact, when we married pam wasn’t an incredible cook. don’t get me wrong, she was a good cook then, but i didn’t know that she would turn into an amazing cook. the best part of all is that she gets better and better each year. she finds herself a challenging course and then slowly but surely figures out a way to cook it and improve upon it.

the good news for the tapestry leadership team is that there is a good chance that at least some of the gumbo will be left for our thursday night meeting. that is if i don’t eat it all.

darth

i guess everyone is posting about the inauguration today but i’ll avoid that other than saying that i am too much of a cynic to think that the world has changed based on an election (other than the fact we americans have our first non-anglo president – which is HUGE) and i haven’t been brainwashed enough either to think that the world is going to end because of an election. truthfully i’m annoyed by the groups on both sides of the political spectrum who look for messiahs in elected officials. the fruits who thought GOD’s kingdom had come to earth because of the election of george w drive me just about as crazy as the ones who presently seem to think the same thing about barack. of course, none of this applies to my friends. 😉

see what you made me do…i ended up talking about the inauguration a little.  anyhow, i thought i would share this photo with you. how cool is that? here’s the original source.
