CHRISTian the lion

this is the video i talked about with the tapestry launch team today at lunch.

basically these two guys raised a lion from cub to lion. when he was too big they figured out a way to release him into the wilds of africa. after a year they wanted to visit and see how he was doing. when they got to africa they were told that CHRISTian (the lion) was now the head of his pride and would not remember him for he was now completely wild. this video is what happened.

it gets a little sappy at the end but it’s still cool.

washington elementary

this is just some tapestry admin stuff. these are photos of washington elementary school, the facility we will rent for services on sunday evening. i’m just putting the pictures up so the launch team can dream a little concerning what we can do with it.

plagarism

"the secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources."
albert einstein

i pride myself on finding a lot of sources for new and different things. i’m not a very creative person but i am quite decent at adapting what other people have done. when i say adapting what i mean is being inspired by someone else’s work to develop something new. adapting is not copying! copying is just duplicating. of course, either way, whether merely copying and adapting, i believe you should always try to give credit to the original source. i try to do this with any significant influence.

the opposite of this is plagiarism and it drives me nuts. i was reading a random blog today when i realized that the wording of the post seemed a little familiar. i bounced around on a google and found the exact wording posted a week earlier on another person’s blog. i would just chalk this up to someone posting someone else’s thoughts and accidentally forgetting to credit the original writer but the plagiaristic blogger actually went to the point of saying that the writing was his thoughts based on someone else’s post. of course, his apparent thoughts are word for word the same as the original blog post.

come on people. plagiarism isn’t cool.

SIDE NOTE – it wasn’t one of my posts that was plagiarized. it’s just a personal pet peeve of mine and therefore i thought i would rant a little.

the trifecta

i have now taken pam and both the boys smallmouth bass fishing and they have all caught their first smallie. a lot of people around here hate smallmouth bass fishing but this wisconsin transplant loves it. they are so much fun. of course, the place i go for smallie fishing also brings out the occassional walleye and catfish which make for good eating.

anyhow, here is everyone’s first smallie.

the process

an interesting video that i will definitely end up using eventually. it’s all about what would happen if the stop sign had to be invented by a modern marketing strategy. it makes me laugh.

rave card

rave card 2

i’m working on a “rave card” (basically a 4”x6” card) to start handing out to people as a reminder of the tapestry launch that is coming up soon (september 14th). once the “rave card” is finished it will probably also turned into some door hangers and perhaps a billboard for a month.

this is just the first mock up of the front of the card. the back will be full of information. the model for the picture is the daughter of one of our friends/neighbors. as you can tell from the look on her face, she’s fun.

i’m just posting this up here to get a few people’s opinion. any thoughts?

the leiningers

DSC_0062_edited-1

we got to reconnect with some old friends yesterday. the leiningers are friends who are missionaries in siberia through the imb. they are in the states on a two month furlough. andy and i were on staff together at the first baptist church of carthage. he and elisabeth are the type of friends that we reconnect with instantly no matter how long it has been since our last conversation. they are simply great people and pam and i love it whenever we get to spend a little time with them. andy was a very good minister at carthage but he is an incredible missionary. some of the stuff that he and elisabeth (because she is just as much a part of what is going on) are doing is simply incredible. their kids are pretty cool also. the imb missionaries that i know are some of the coolest people in the world.

the great hunter (actually fisher)

IMG_0247

yesterday sergio went fishing for the first time. this morning he wanted to catch something and eat it. the above picture was sergio’s lunch. we went to what is known as the “lagoon” and caught a decent number of catfish. this was the smallest of the bunch.

sooner or later i will stop posting about fishing but the point area is simply some of the best fishing i have ever experienced. i’ve lived in 6 states and fished in many more and i have to say that known of them have compared to what i am experiencing in the stevens point area. i might not always catch the biggest fish but there are always plenty of fish to catch.

just a quick report

i’ll tell more later but for all those who were worried about our venezuelan guest’s first time experience with fishing i thought i would give you a quick report. well, it turned out that sergio had not only never been fishing before but he had also never canoed before. so the first 15 minutes we a little excited. i am glad to report that we did not flip the canoe. i do however need to say that i seriously thought we would flip it. we took on a little water before his body adjusted to the idea of a canoe. after that it was time for fishing. it was a bit of an off day actually. we were out on the river for 1 hour and 45 minutes. serg only caught 9 smallmouth bass and 1 walleye. we had plenty of other misses. in fact, sergio’s very first cast resulted in a fish that he fought all the way to the boat but unfortunately it shook itself free before we were able to get him in the boat. it’s was a pretty good way to introduce someone to fishing.

of course, sergio wants to go back out tomorrow.

the photo on the left was sergio’s first fish (i laughed the whole time he reeled it in and he didn’t understand why – he thought this was a decent fish – by the end of the day he no longer wanted to count the small ones). the fish on the right was sergio’s largest fish (15” – not bad for a nubie).
