i was right and wrong

i'm an 80 year old lady

i was right
after an awful experience of waiting and being ignored for an hour and a half i was finally able to visit with the orthopedic surgeon and he told me i was right in thinking that i had a stage 2 calf tear/strain. i’m not the biggest fan of the medical industry. his advice was to keep doing what i was already doing and come back next week for another look. if i continue to have problems next week he will recommend physical therapy. i don’t really figure that i will go back for another visit. the only reason i went to the doc was because i needed a prescription to get physical therapy and hopefully heal in time for the marathon. i don’t think i’ll go and pay for another visit forr him to say “you’ve made about a week’s progress.”

i was wrong
once again (for the third or fourth time) i was second in our ncaa tournament bracket. congrats to sharron for winning the whole thing. this means i owe her lunch but since she said that she would probably give it to jon, her son, i guess i owe jon lunch.

i’m not the biggest fan of doctors but …

it would appear that i am going to have to visit one because i am fairly sure that that i have grade 2 torn calf muscle. my right calf feels like a have a hard monkey fist in it and my ankle has swollen to the point that you can’t feel my ankle bones anymore. it’s all a little freaky. i’m on the road tomorrow so hopefully i will be able to visit a doctor tuesday. if i’m lucky it will merely be a grade 1 strain and only take a couple of weeks rest before running again. this will slow me down during the music city marathon but i will still be able to compete. if it’s a grade 2 strain/tear then things become a little trickier. i think i could probably still make it through the marathon with 4 weeks rest but it would be very hard on my lungs and legs. we’ll just have to see what’s up when i see the doctor. of course, i pretty much feel like i have accurately diagnosed myself already.

SIDE NOTE – driving through illinois is boring. it’s great for the gas mileage because it’s straight and flat but taxing on the mind because IT IS BORING. i’d rather have hills and turns and get bad gas mileage than have great fuel consumption and be bored out of my head. the one highlight was the wind farm we were able to see along the interstate. i think there’s a spiritual connection to that but i’m too tired from driving all day to type it out so you’ll have to figure it out for yourself.

SIDE SIDE NOTE – “eat this book: by eugene peterson is amazing.

just a reminder

They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
He replied, “Come along and see for yourself.”
They came, saw where he was living, and ended up staying with him for the day. It was late afternoon when this happened.
John 1:28b-29

i’m just saving this as a reminder to “chew on” this passage and especially these two verses.

pass the cheese please

the fam and i are in wisconsin of all places. it is about 35 degrees colder up here than it is in baton rouge and there are still a few mounds of dirty snow hanging around in parking lots. it’s a little different from the heat and humidity that we are used to down in the red stick city. the best part has been enjoying everyone’s accents and hearing the people we meet in restaurants and such respond to ours.

SIDE NOTE – happy april fools day tomorrow.

casino royale

casino_royale_3.jpg
i’m presently watching “casino royale” and even though i am currently only half way through the movie i have to say that i am very impressed. it is extremely different from all the other bond movie (which i loved) but it is different in a good way. i’m enjoying “casino royale” because it’s a new interpretation on the old movies. i love it when people take chances. with an hour to go it looks like this was a chance worth taking.

SIDE NOTE – i’ve lost the ncaa bracket. when kansas lost to ucla my hopes went down the drain. it appears that i will be stuck with second (or worse) and sharron will end up winning. oh the pain.

my run for the day
distance – 7.1 miles
time – 1:08:36
pace – 9:40/mile

how the tournament bracket works

there seems to be a little confusion concerning the scoring of the ncaa basketball tournament bracket. basically the confusion comes from sharon trying to say that we are tied because we both have the same number of games correct right now. not so fast my 11 point trailing friend. the bracket is determined by the score rather than the number of games right. this means that each winner of a game is worth a certain number of points. specifically each win in a round is worth a certain number of points PLUS the seed number of the team that win. this means that picking a lower seed to win ends up equally more points. wins in each of the rounds are worth the following:

first round – 1 point per win
second round – 4 points per win
third round – 7 points per win
fourth round – 10 points per win
semifinals – 13 points per win
finals – 20 points per win

since you add the seed number to the win points it means that a win from a lower seed gives you more points (which makes since because it is harder/luckier to pick a win from a lower seed). this is win i am presently beating sharon even though we have the same number of wins.

so quit your belly aching sharon and deal with the fact that even though you are from basketball country (the mid west) this southern boy is winning.

of course, i think you are about to kick my but in the elite eight
