though i haven’t emailed it out yet here’s january 2008’s tapestry monthly prayer email.
thanks to all who pray for tapestry to be planted. GOD will plant tapestry in 2008!
here’s the monthly prayer email that i send out for tapestry. i am honored to have such wonderful people praying for me and more importantly for tapestry. if you did not receive email and you would like to please email me at robert[dot]terrell[at]gmail[dot]com.
this is probably a waste of time but i’m going to try it anyway. so here goes.
stevens point has a large “green” (i.e. eco) community. this is just fine with pam and i because over the past few years we have been dealing with how to reduce out impact on the environment (anyone who ever looked under my desk at parkview and saw all the recyclables i was keeping under there could speak to this). so the idea jumped into my head of using paper grocery bags (the stores up here still use them) for at least part of our promotional items. i’ve been working on it today. i’ve been needing to have some basic info on something i could give to people who ask questions about tapestry and i thought the grocery bag paper would make a nice sturdy cover for this info thingy. i’ve been goofing off with the idea little today and it turns out that the ink jet printer works great on the grocery bags – it has a real “gritty” look to it that i like. i’ll put this together with white paper for the actual info and stitch them together for a nice little hand made info thingy (i have lots of time and very little money – a good combination for this type of thing). i’ll post a photo when i finish the first non-sample one.
so here’s the part that is probably stupid but maybe worth a try. i went by staples today to buy some paper for producing the inside of the info thingy (recycled paper of course). when i went to check out the clerk asked me if i wanted a “rewards” card. the “rewards” card is basically a marketing gimmick where every 3 months i get a coupon for 10% of the amount i have spent on paper and copying. the goal is to get me to come back to staples all the time. that’s fine with me since i don’t know where the local office supply place is yet and i would prefer not to use walmart for my paper needs. so i got one. the cashier also said anyone else who used my rewards number would have their transactions contributed to the total my coupon would be based on. i’m all for getting a coupon for free stuff for tapestry. in my book, free stuff for the church is great (as long as there aren’t strings attached).
here’s my request – if you use or your company uses staples would you mind entering my rewards number when you buy paper products or copying? i’m not asking you to use staples. in fact, i would prefer that you use a local company. yet, if you absolutely have to use staples (for example, your boss will fire you if you use something other than staples, you live next door to a staples and don’t have transportation anywhere else, or perhaps you are deathly afraid of all office supply stores other than staples) and you wouldn’t mind giving them the number i am using for tapestry i would certainly appreciate it.
so here’s my rewards number:
SIDE NOTE – j.t. has become a youth ministry god because marko pointed to one of his posts today (a post that i would agree was excellent). it is now my goal to quote j.t. as much as possible within my posts and thereby raise my ministry street cred. of course, if he was so inclined marko could point to one of my posts and thereby raise me to j.t.’s level so i would no longer have to grovel beneath j.t.’s ministerial feet. in fact, marko if you wanted to encourage all your readers, friends, family, and neighbors to enter my staples reward number when they buy paper and printing from staples i would appreciate that also.
i love brad wenner and if it were not “against the laws of nature (and the fact i am already married) i would make him my wife (random simpsons paraphrase – willy says this to his tractor).” brad sent me an invite to grand central – a previously unknown to me google acquisition. it appears to be the perfect solution for my tapestry phone problem. i just signed up for it and it looks great. here’s what it does for me:
so tapestry has a phone number (715)952-4478. thanks brad.
by the way, you should check out his photography (flickr stream). he’s incredible.
right now i feel like i’m in a peculiar situation with the birth of tapestry. the issue is that i have been dreaming about this for quite some time, where as the people i have been meeting with are just now beginning to consider it as an option. so i’m at the point of slowly moving from the dream of tapestry to the reality of it. yet i can’t really start moving too fast until others are on board with the church. so what i get to continue doing is dreaming and hoping for other people to join in on the dream.
so today just for the fun of it i went to view some leasing property in downtown stevens point. i have mixed feelings concerning leasing property. on one side i would prefer to be rather nomadic. i think it sends a powerful message when a church decides to place it’s resources towards priorities other than a building. on the other side of the coin i think store front churches send a powerful message also. for me it connects very strongly with the original concept of the “ecclesia” being a body of those called out from within the city. there is something amazing symbolic in a church building that is completely physically connected with the other buildings of the city around it, rather than a church building that is a separate little fortress from the other buildings within it’s community. i also think it is just plain cool that anyone walking by a store front church building can look in and see what the people of GOD are doing in the room (hopefully they will be able to see the people of GOD doing many other things all around the community). it’s open and inviting. i’m ready for some other people to start joining the dream of tapestry so we can start deciding what messages are most important to us.
so without any real agenda, other than curiosity, i went downtown today to look at a few of the buildings currently available for lease. after looking at three buildings (one of which had a large side room that could be separated off from it and would work perfectly for what who i believe we will be in a year and a half). it was so cool to walk into a room and imagine a group of people dreaming about and living out the life GOD wants for them. of course, we’re a long ways from being in any type of building. still it was nice.
SIDE NOTE – i presently have a huge scab on my forehead from hitting the exhaust pipe of pam’s minivan saturday. from a distance it looks like a large “mole” on my forehead. because of this “mole” i battled in my mind over whether or not i should get my wisconsin driver’s license today. i finally came down on the side of getting it today because i thought it would be funny to see an chasier’s, security agent’s, or officer’s response (hopefully it will never be an officer’s) when he/she looks at my license and sees a huge “mole” on my photo forehead but not on my present head. it made me laugh continually while i was in the dmv waiting for my photo. i’ll post the photo when i receive my license in the mail.
first, it’s really fun being a packers fan this year for two reasons 1) even though i have been a packers fan since 1978, until this year i had never been a packers fan in packers’ country – oh it’s fun, and 2) the packers are kicking butt! (of course, we just lost to the bears.)
second, i have an inch long burn on my forehead now. i went under pam’s minivan to check out something and bumped my head on the exhaust pipe. it instantly burned the first layer of skin off of my forehead. i feel pretty stupid.
third, the nekoosa giant pumpkin festival was a blast. they hollowed out 1000 pound pumpkins and used them for a pumpkin/boat race up the wisconsin river. not something that i ever thought i would see in my life but it was a lot of fun.
fourth, i spent monday through wesdnesday at a pastors’ conference at green lake conference center (which was gorgeous). during the conference i was involved in a couple of conversations concerning what type of marketing i would do to start tapestry and what type of marketing had been done to start various other churches. while i’m not the biggest fan of marketing in general (we have taught our kids to shout “that’s a lie” when certain television commercials come on), i do realize that there is a need for a little. still, i have no interest in “marketing” tapestry. JESUS said “and I, as I am lifted up from the earth, will attract everyone to me and gather them around me.” that’s how i would like to draw people into the community of tapestry – lift JESUS up. i would like us to be involved in doing some things where only JESUS can get the glory and then let HIM decide if he wants to get any of these people involved in tapestry or not. i picture this being something like the commercial where the guy says he found the internet in a swamp. i like to think of a guy or girl seeing what we are doing one day and thinking “well there’s where JESUS is.” i guess this means i need to find out who the “lepers” and “sinners” are within our community and do something JESUS would do with them.
here’s the tapestry monthly prayer email for october. if you are not receiving these through email and would like to please email me (robert {dot} terrell {at} gmail.com) or leave a comment and i will add you to it.
SIDE NOTE – does anyone who reads this blog (besides brad because he’s already helping) know anything about environmentally friendly printing (don’t worry dad i’m going to quiz you on this when you get up here)? the stevens point area is a very green focused area. this is great with pam and i because we have been going this way for quite some time. i thought it would be fun to considering printing tapestry stuff on recyclable paper from local grocery bags. i’m thinking about trying a little silk screening with this but i’m open to anything. anyone out there have any ideas?
tapestry has an mailing address now. it’s p.o. box 992, stevens point, wisconsin 54481.
i’m still working on getting a phone number for tapestry (one that i can hook up with voicemail). i was really hopping that skype was going to the answer i was looking for but unfortunately i can’t find a local stevens point number within skype’s available numbers. i really wish there was one because skype would be perfect for what i need out of a phone number for tapestry at this point (basically a way to have voicemail).
while i am watching “the natural” with my oldest son i thought i would send out a big “thank you” to an anonymous giver. today i received to boxes of niv bibles that someone sent for tapestry. i don’t know who did it but i really appreciate it. there have been several people who have made contributions to tapestry and in addition to them parkview baptist church gave us some older equipment for us to use. i really appreciate these contributions.
the one today came at a great time because i had a somewhat depressing day. my goal today was to make a lot of contacts that i could move forward on over the next week or so. i’ve been trying to talk to as many of the local pastors as i could to learn from them what has been done before in the area. so i placed as many calls as i could and emailed as many addresses as i could find.
nada.
i wasn’t able to get through to anybody today. it was nobody’s fault. i just wasn’t able to reach people during the times they were reachable. the problem for me was that it was somewhat disheartening. i know i’ve only been doing this a month but there are moments were i think the church is going to blossom in a matter of seconds. then there are other days where i wonder what type of mess i have gotten my family into. after making zero contacts all morning i felt a little bit more of the former. so i decided to jump out of the house for a little while. i ran around town, prayed some, and got a diet coke (a good trio for my soul). when i got back to the house there were the bibles.
perfect timing. thanks.
several of you have had perfect timing and i truly appreciate it.
