4 chairs

4 chairs

at tapestry we save the back row of seats for our guests.

i know this sounds a little odd but you need to understand the setup of a typical sunday evening with us. we try to set our chairs up in such a manner that almost a circleconversation is encouraged. this means our chair set-up varies from a semi-circle to completely in the round. while i love our setups i also recognize that they can be a little intimidating for a guest.

our setup can be all the more intimidating for a guest when you consider the natural tendency of people to not sit in the first row (some claim this is because i tend to “spray” people when i preach but i personally seriously doubt this). we typically set up 6-8 chairs total for the front rows (total is for both sides) and there are usually only a few people who sit in them. other rows might fill up but the front row never does. this means that the most obviously open spots are also the most intimidating chairs for someone to sit in. so we work around this by setting up 4 chairs on the back of each side of the room that we save for guests. these are the easiest chairs to get into and out of. you can come in late and leave early if a semi-circle setupyou want to. these chairs are saved for our guests in an attempt to make them feel welcome. who would have thought the back row could do such a thing?

of course, if you attend a church regularly then you probably know that the back row is usually the first to fill up. church people like the back row. we’re a little different. we save these seats as a gift for those who are our guests.

so if you come to tapestry for the first time and see 4 chairs set up in the back please know that you can sit anywhere you like but we have saved everyone’s favorite seats for you.

this was what mobile was like

we have been having some pretty bad storms around the point area recently. it actually has been kind of reminiscent of when pam and i lived in mobile, alabama where major storms happen every summer afternoon. i have never seen roads flood as often around here. over the past four years in central wisconsin our experience with rain has been that it tends to drizzle for two to four days and then become sunny again. so these storms have been abnormal for our wisconsin weather experience. the above picture is from thursday night when some threads from tapestry fed at the place of peace.

IMG_1665just in case you are wondering the place of peace is a thursday night meal that was originally a part of the local catholic workers movement/chapter (i will probably discuss my thoughts on “movements” versus “organizations” and the “organizations” that call themselves “movements” later but not right now). about a year ago the point area catholic workers chapter went defunct and asked evergreeen church to take over the place of peace weekly feed. evergreen is a great church and their pastor al kinnunen is someone that i really enjoy being in ministry with. anyhow the place of peace invites locals groups to do a weekly thursday night meal for anyone who needs one. it’s an interesting and fun group that comes for the meal. a while back tapestry started doing a meal every three months. talking to genesis, the evergreen member who coordinates the thursday night meal, everyone there see a lot of spaghetti and lasagna brought in by groups. therefore, tapestry has become the “jambalaya church.” while i make the jambalaya all the other threads make other homemade things to bring – such as fresh bread from adam h (a few slices of which made it back to my house and i have been thankful for each one i have eaten). it is always a good night.

back to the storms.

after the meal at place of peace i jumped on church street to head back home to plover. this is a 6.5 mile drive that normally takes no more than 20 minutes (and that is stretching it). unfortunately i ran in the underpass pictured above. so i turned around to use division street to get to the interstate. the problem was that division was flooding bad enough around the ymca that only trucks were making it through the road. so i turned around again to try water street. i should have realized that with a name like water street there was no way it wasn’t going to be flooded. it was flooded.

in a rather anti-climatic way i finally made it imagehome by weaving around streets with less water on them. instead of the twenty minutes maximum time that it usually takes me to get home i ended up traveling for around an hour trying to make it 6.5 miles.

i need to end this post now because we are being hit by another storm. seriously. 60 mph winds, rain, and hail. i’m not used to experiencing this up here.

disciple making

this is discipling from the foursquare church on vimeo.

adam h showed this video to me. i love it. i think it describes so many things that are right about what it means to lead people to be disciples of JESUS CHRIST. it is so easy to forget that being a disciple is about following CHRIST and not about doing religious activities. even in a relatively young church like tapestry it become very easy to forget this. the church needs to be more concerned with helping people to become follower of CHRIST who do the things of JESUS than we are concerned with producing people who come to what we do, speak the right religious language, or send out the right religious signals for all to see.

i believe tapestry is involved in making real disciples. i pray that we continue to do so.

how tapestry celebrates easter

IMG_1400 IMG_1433

i’m too tired to type much but i want to say that i love the way the threads of tapestry participate in holy week. each year we try to do an act of service during the week and then do a simple tenebrae gathering to remember CHRIST’s curcifixion. this year we fed at place of peace on thursday and then held our tenebrae gathering at the encore room in the uwsp university center. we had so many people at the place of peace that we had to take turns working because there wasn’t room in the kitchen for the 20-something people we had there. i love the fact that the church i am a part of gets super excited about serving people made in the image of GOD.

super bowl gathering

BenRoethlisbergerVsPackers

just a reminder to everyone that instead of tapestry’s normal weekly gathering at washginton elementary school we will be watching the game together at our house (3311 arbor vitae lane). the church will be providing jambalaya and drinks. everyone else is asked to bring a heavy appetizer – you can figure out for yourself how heavy. we’ll do a devotion at 5 p.m. this is the third year that we have done this and it is always a blast.

helping with weddings

wedding-bride-groom-kiss-beach

monday i was listening to a talk of the nation episode discussing the increasing trend of young couples without higher education to postpone marriage but not kids. the trends have swapped between people with higher education and people without higher education. those who have four year degrees or greater are now more likely to get married and less likely to get divorced than those without four year degrees. while there are multiple reasons for for this trend the one that has been bouncing around in my head deals with the cost of wedding ceremonies. many of the couples postponing getting married said that a large part of their wait was because they could not presently afford the wedding ceremony they wanted.

this has been killing me the more i think about it. tapestry has been involved in advent conspiracy because we believe that the present manner in which the u.s. celebrates CHRISTmas needs to be challenged and confronted. obviously there are probably issues other than the cost of a wedding ceremony that are keeping many of these couples from getting married that should be dealt with. yet i wonder if the church needs to begin confronting societal expectations concerning the costs of wedding ceremonies while also dealing with these other issues. for example, the average cost of a wedding in plover is between $14,030 and $23,384. shouldn’t the bride of CHRIST (i.e. the church) offer a different and more reasonable model of what a beautiful wedding ceremony is? how can we expect young couples to start healthy marriages when many are going into debt for their wedding ceremony?

the most beautiful wedding that pam and i have ever been a part of is also one of the least expensive ones we have ever been to. it was the wedding of the daughter of two of our friends in missouri. the ceremony took place on a small hill overlooking a wheat field and it was amazing. it was also very inexpensive. the whole thing depended upon the creativity, love, and effort of their family and friends. it would be a wonderful example and model for others hoping to have a meaningful yet inexpensive wedding ceremony.

i’m beginning to contemplate whether there is a way that tapestry can offer something different to our community in regards to wedding ceremonies. we have 3 pro photographers and tons of wonderfully creative people in our church. what if churches began to offer their resources to young couples in such a way that the expectation of an expensive wedding ceremony was challenged? i don’t know what it would look like for us to confront the cost of wedding ceremonies in our present age but it is something i am interested in exploring. i do think that the community of faith has a ton to offer in regards to “creativity, love, and effort” and i have already seen the beauty that those three resources bring to a wedding ceremony. again i am not sure what they would look like but it is something that i am pondering and would like to enter into conversations concerning.

want to build a house? kind of…

IMG_0069

some threads from tapestry are going back to nicaragua in january. this will be the 4th trip for people from our young community of faith. we’re going to change our plans a little this time and participate in building a house for a family. well we’re actually not going to be the ones in charge of building it. you see a while back the nicaraguan CHRISTian outreach figured out that we could build a house for a family for around $1,800. so starting last year several groups went down and built houses. i think we have four houses built now. in the past the gringos have been building the house with the nicas watching.

in august i was being told about this by moises, evelyn, and claudia and on a whim i asked them about the idea of paying for nica labor to build the house. i thought we might could help the local economy a little more. there response was that it would actually help two guys within kilumbo get more experience with a third guy who was a house builder and thereby help them get more jobs. in other words, we would be helping the local economy, giving these guys the pride of leading their own job, and furthering their training in a trade that can help support their family. the additional cost for the labor? $200!

yep we can build the house, pay three nicaraguan workers, and then work along side them as their assistants for a grand total of $2,000. so that’s what tapestry is trying to raise money for now. last CHRISTmas we gave up receiving offerings for the church so that all the money could go for a fresh water well. this year we are going to try and give $2,000 on top our normal offerings for the support of the church ministry. it’s a big step for our small group of people.

if you are interested in being a part of this you are welcome to do so too. if we have extra we’ll either save it for another house next trip or use it for more pressing needs in diriamba.

november prayer email

for a few years i have been sending out a prayer email to a group of people who have been praying for tapestry even before tapestry started up. here is the november 2010 prayer email.

i started using mail chimp last month to enable people to subscribe/unsubscribe to the email on their own. i’m really loving the free membership that mail chimp offers to small organizations like tapestry. it is a great little system and i can see why larger organizations pay good money to use it.

if you would like to signup for the prayer email you can do so now by going to this link (http://eepurl.com/7-wo). if you received a copy of the prayer email earlier today then you are already on the list.

a big THANKS goes out to everyone who prays for tapestry.
