derringer pen & don’t invite anyone

the derringer pen

i’ve mentioned before the 4 things a man has on him at all legal times to solve problems? this is a list that i was taught from my dad and i have changed based on modern life. the list is:

  • a pen
  • a bandaide
  • a knife
  • a calling card/cell phone (this is where the change is – it used to be a quarter).

my dad used to say that you could use these four items to solve pretty much any problem you will ever face. it has worked for me and i continually push it with adam and noah.

a few weeks ago adam holte introduced me to the perfect pen for always being prepared. it is the derringer pen and it is designed to fit in your wallet. when adam showed it to me i knew i had to get one for me and the boys. i gave them theirs this morning and they were thrilled. as a youth minister i had teens always picking on me for having a pen in my pocket. with the derringer pen they would have never even have known how prepared i was.

NOW FOR THE “&”

i have a friend from seminary who recently posted this on his facebook/twitter feed:

blurred to protect the innocent

the guy who wrote this is a friend i know from SWBTS (where i got my masters degree). he was a swell guy in seminary and i believe him to be a swell guy now. i am sure that he is a great pastor and i think his suggestion is generally a good thing. BUT i want to encourage you NOT to invite anyone to tapestry (or your church) for easter. instead i recommend that we all take advantage of the spiritual nature of this week and easter to talk with and listen to our friends, family, and neighbors about their lives, faith, and struggles. instead of just trying to get them to church let’s become intimately involved in our neighbors’ lives and thereby demonstrate the love of GOD for all to see. if you begin to believe that tapestry would connect with your friend and help them to explore faith in CHRIST and follow HIM then you should most definitely invite them. if you are a thread and think that another church would connect better with who your friend is and who he/she is becoming then skip tapestry for awhile and go with them to whatever church that you think would connect best with them. we’ll see you back once you have your friend connected with people who love your friend.

basically what i am trying to say is instead of inviting people get involved with people. JESUS will show up better through your involvement in someone’s life than by getting that person to come to one worship gathering.

the current terrell family debate

the current terrell family (minus adam who is not home right now – darn driving teenagers) debate involves above commercial. pam and noah started debating whether the non-whippet dog is a basset hound or some weird cross breed that just looks like a basset. noah, correctly, says the dog is a really cute basset hound while pam, wrongly, believes that it is a divergent basset look-a-like. obviously pam is wrong but the debate lasted a pretty long time. i walked in on the middle of it. i added my two cents worth – basically that noah was right and pam was wrong. you would think that this would solve the debate but it didn’t. we continued to re-watch the commercial and the discussion. since she wasn’t going to give in and see reason pam ended the debate by telling noah “the jerk store call and they are out of you.

nothing ends a terrell debate as good as a random seinfeld reference.

a facebook passion

you should go read this NOW! it is exactly what the title says. it’s the passion of CHRIST detailed like a facebook feed. i first thought it was funny and then i was moved.

i think i’ll go have a conversation now

Sex-Robot_doomsday_604x341

i just finished reading a quick post from gabe lyons concerning roxxxy the world’s first sex robot and how many of us view community and conversation. first, i’m sadden to think that some people will be so lonely and/or have such a mixed up/fearful view of relationships that a talking sex robot sounds like a good idea to them. secondly, let me quote from what lyons wrote:

let me ask you: when was the last time you had a meaningful conversation with someone? i’m talking about an eye-to-eye, soul-to-soul kind of interaction.

if it hasn’t been recently, i’d understand. consider your competition. over 350 million facebook users refer to their average of 135 digital acquaintances as “friends” and many have come to believe that “community” is something to “log in” and out of, not a bond achieved over years of pain and mutual sacrifice. some of us, if we’re being honest, struggle to relate well with our own husbands or wives, or to carry on deep conversations with friends. could it be possible that we are losing the idea of intimate, connected, authentic and sacrificial relationship to an entire generation?

it’s a quick article and well worth the few minutes it would take you to read it.

yeah for no destruction

hadron

just in case you are wondering the large hadron collider worked today and we did not experience the apocalypse via a black hole. woohoo! ht netorama.

going to cragislist otherwise

my dad got a deal on these bikes three years ago and gave them to pam and i. we’ve riden them a little since we moved to wisconsin. unfortunately we never rode them that much because i was busy running and pam doesn’t enjoy riding by herself. since then pam’s back went out, she had surgery, and now according to her doctor needs to ride on a comfort bike that is designed to keep her back straight. since then these bikes have just sat around in our garage. i’m going to place them on craigslist for $50 each or $80 for the pair but if someone who reads the blog or knows me on facebook wants to make me an offer i’ll gladly cut you a deal. help me find these almost new bikes a good home.

a long drive for lunch

chick-fil-a

we love wisconsin BUT there are a few restaurants from the south that we miss. some of these are nice restaurants and a few are fast food chains. chick-fil-a is one of the fast food restaurants that we miss. there is only one chick-fil-a in the entire state of wisconsin and that one restaurant is 3 1/2 hours away from the point area. this is a terrible thing! it seriously makes me question the intelligence of my new home state that i love so much. every now and then there is simply nothing like a chick-fil-a sandwich. even more important there is NOTHING LIKE A CHICKEN BISKET FROM CHICK-FIL-A. they are incredible. how can the great state of wisconsin not realize this and proliferate chick-fil-a’s all over the state? i just don’t understand.

a couple of months ago we were visited by sarah r., a former student from the parkview youth ministry and an impressive young lady who i am sure the world will hear about in the near future. we took sarah around central wisconsin, introduced her to tubing on ice, made her walk on the frozen wisconsin river, brought her to tapestry, and introduced her to the little slices of heaven called wisconsin cheese. sarah was nice enough to send us a chick-fil-a gift card as a thank you for her time in point. anyone who visits us needs to know that we just enjoy your visit – no gift cards are expected – but if they are sent we won’t return them 😉 anyhow the gift card was enough of a reason for us to travel 3 1/2 hours to racine, wisconsin to eat at the only chick-fil-a in wisconsin.

now it may seem a little absurd to you to travel 7 hours total to eat at a fast food restaurant. of course, such a thought simply means that you had never eaten at a chick-fil-a. you should correct this inadequacy in your life right now – drive to racine this moment. i promise it will be worth every mile. it definitely was for us. i’m sure the cost of our sandwiches probably works out to around $15 each but that’s a small price to pay for a southern fried family memory.

mhmmmm! waffle fries!

really? this is the name you pick?

IMG_2062

eric g. called me one day to say “you’ve got to take a photo of the name of this company.” why would someone name their company “triple k”? surely they realized that their is a certain organization that has a really bad reputation that has 3 k’s in its name. at least that was what came to mind for both eric and i when we saw the name of this landscape company. poor choice for a name in my opinion.

palm sunday potluck

Style: "Agfa"

just a little reminder for all the “threads” out there.

tonight we will celebrate palm sunday and the coming of the kingdom of GOD by eating together during our worship gathering. the whole gathering will be based around a meal we share together and the LORD’s supper. we will do this at our normal time (6-7:15 p.m.). if you can bring food that’s great. the plan is for everyone who can to bring enough of their favorite dish for 8 people. if you can’t bring food then just bring your stomach. 🙂

oh i’m so looking forward to this.
