office hours

i spent a little bit of time with a new pastor today. he has come into a church where the old pastor had been there for 25 years and the taken A LOT of vacation over his last 3-4 years. apparently the church members felt like they could never find their minister because when he wasn’t on vacation he wasn’t anywhere near the church office either. the church’s response was to get this young minister to sign a contract of what is expected of him. i think this is a good idea. i like knowing what people expect of me and i like them knowing what i expect in return. part of his contract is that he will spend a certain amount of time in the church office and those hours will be published for the church members to see.

this is where the problem arises. this church needs new members. these new members are either going to come because of the old members inviting people or the new pastor meeting new people and inviting them. since this pastor is new in town he is going to find it hard to meet anyone outside the church when he is required to be in the office. now i understand that it is important for people to know how they can reach the pastor but i’m not sure the answer is sticking the pastor away in an office alone. i’m real thankful that people in tapestry consider my “office” to be emy j’s coffee house. i would rather be in the public than in a closed off room.

come on out

comeonout

first, i love asbo jesus. his cartoons hit so many things on target. like the one above. every now and then as i dream about the future of tapestry i wonder what will happen when/if we have to move our worship gatherings. i love the fact that we meet in rented space and that the space is a public school. it fits with who we are and since one of our dreams is to form new churches from our growth instead of just getting bigger we shouldn’t need to move. it is a part of who we are.

i’m not opposed to church’s having buildings. all the previous churches that i was involved in had buildings that they owned. sometimes the buildings were used incredibly well and sometimes not so much.

the problem is that often the building becomes the center of everything. it is the focal point that people try to convince other people to come to. that’s why people say “where do you go to church” or “where is your church located.” sometime in the past we reached the point that we associated church with a building rather than a group of people. every now and then i am real thankful that tapestry doesn’t have a building. it’s a ton easier to focus on the church being the people when you don’t have a building to mistakenly think is the church.

growtivation

wow – this is spot on satire of many contemporary/modern worship services. i’ve been to quite a few such services and they are surprising close to this video.

the irony is that several people in the ministerial association to which i belong think this is what tapestry is all about. they see tapestry connecting with younger unchurched people and since they seem convinced that you can only connect this group by edgier music, video, and lights they assume that’s what we do. instead we are pretty boring.

we do have stage lights but that is to hide the utter ugliness of the gym in which we meet. the closest thing we have to a laser show is the laser pointer on my honeywell powerpresenter RF (in my opinion the best wireless presentation tool) and it doesn’t seem to work half the time. every now and then i do try to hit eric, our music leader, in the eye with my lasrer pointer but i don’t think that really counts as a laser show. our music is around 90% classic hymns with drums and an acoustic guitar. it’s good stuff because eric, joel, brad, and drew are awesome but it’s rarely very edgy.

also, our “hipness factor” is incredibly low because … well … i’m involved. eric doesn’t help much with the “hipness factor” either. you can tell this by the way natalie, his wife, introduces herself to people. she says she is married to the guy who looks like a hobo. we all know that hobos are known for their unhipness -(btw if you have not seen john hodgman’s piece called “hobo matters” you should watch it right now).

anyhow if y9ou have ever been to a “relevant” worship gathering you should watch the above video. you’ll find it very diverting.

ht ed stetzer on the video.

branding?

i’m not a big fan of the term “branding” when used by churches. i understand what is meant and i am definitely not opposed to churches having good looking logos, fonts, and colors but the term “branding” really rubs me the wrong way. part of the reason for this is the apparent view of “branding” by some churches as the ultimate way of attracting people to their church. this blows my mind. why in the world would a non-follower of CHRIST go to a church because of a cool logo (most of which in my opinion predictably shout “hip CHRISTian”). i’m betting that they wouldn’t. CHRISTians, on the other hand, well we are pretty much idiots for new logos and such.

richard reising has a great post on the issue of “re-banding on momentum.” he hits pretty hard on the tendency of some churches to think that a new logo and look are what they really need to reach people and therefore they change their look without changing anything beyond the surface. reising states:

What this represents is surface re-branding. It is an epidemic. It is the concept that if we are not attracting people, it is because we do not have the right name or image, and therefore, we need to change it and re-design our look. With all the love I can muster, if you are not growing what you have, it is not because of your logo. If you are not connecting with people that come through your doors in a way that causes them to come back and bring others, no amount of design can create a long term fix. If you do have momentum however, the right brand can be a catalyst to new levels of growth.

it’s a pretty good post and worth the read. i’m not sure that our “branding” (oh how i hate this word) says much to the world outside the church other than someone in the organization likes graphic design. since i like graphic design i’m ok with that but i’m not going to waste a lot of tapestry’s resources on it.

you have to run fast to run faster

noah-running

tapestry seems to be a church of runners. we have a lot of threads who are passionate runners. several of our college students are members of the uwsp cross country and track teams. when i ran the oshkosh half marathon last sunday i ran into three threads who were also running the race. we have several within our small group who have run marathons and one of our number has even run the boston marathon (a feat that i will never be able to copy). so it was no surprise a few weeks ago when one of those involved within tapestry suggested we start a running group. i thought it was a great idea but then remembered that there is a group that meets at the uwsp outdoor track on wednesday afternoons. one of the things we feel at tapestry is that if you like something it is best to join a group that is already doing it outside the church community rather than starting a “CHRISTian” group for the same purpose.

i’m sure you know this but just in case you don’t i’ll tell you that there is a “CHRISTian” cultural ghetto that tries to get believers in JESUS CHRIST to stay within it. you want to watch movies? well the “CHRISTian” cultural bubble will create a “CHRISTian” movie group that you can watch those movies with. you want to read books with people and discuss the books you’ve read? the ghetto will develop a “CHRISTian” book club for you and others to read "CHRISTian” literature and discuss them. you want to exercise? well the bubble will create a “CHRISTian” exercise group for you and you can listen to “CHRISTian” music while you sweat with others just like you. the ghetto makes it where you never have to be around people who aren’t like you. it makes things safe and warm and it sets up a place for you to bring your friends to. this is key – the ghetto tries to get people to come to it rather than encouraging believers to go out into the world.

those involved in tapestry typically try to stay as far as possible from the “CHRISTian” cultural ghetto. our goal is to constantly “go out” rather than asking people to come to us. so when someone has an idea for the group to be involved in something new the first question typically is “what groups are there already in our community doing this that we can join?” that’s what the running group conversation turned to. there is already a group doing what we would like to do so why not just join it instead of creating a “CHRISTian” one? therefore i decided i would go run with this group this past wednesday night.

now i know and accept that i am not a fast runner. all the same i still usually finish firmly in the middle of the races i am involved in. typically about 49% of the people involved in the race are faster than me and 49% are slower. i’ve grown used to this. so when i went to the running group wednesday night and realized that the oldest member of the group was running a pace that was a full minute and a half faster than my best pace i knew i was in trouble. the group was incredibly nice and FAST. i mean really fast. several of the 12-15 people there had run ncaa division-i cross country when they were in school. three of the guys there had just finished the boston marathon on monday and all had finished in under 3 hours. heck one of the guys had finished the boston in 2:35 – THAT’S FAST.

they were too fast for me. i hung with them for 2 miles and then had to give up and run at my own pace before i began violently vomiting. ironically it was great. i figure running a couple of miles with them each wednesday will dramatically help my speed even though it will be killing me. so i will be sticking with them (at least for a couple of miles each week). i won’t be there this week because of the q conference in chicago but i will running with them as often as possible. i hope many other threads will be joining me. don’t worry if you are slow. i’ll be there to make you feel better about yourself 🙂

SIDE NOTE – many threads are running the tiger trek 5k that is put on by washington elementary school. here’s the signup form. you can turn it in on sunday night if you are interested.

i ♥ potlucks

pam forwarded this video from new name pictures (an artist community from the hollywood adventist church). i think tapestry and the hollywood church would get along well if for no other reason than we both love potlucking. potlucks are a wonderful physical representation of the spiritual reality of the church existing as the body of CHRIST – we are more together as the body of CHRIST than our individual parts.

i also really like their “i’m a social justice CHRISTian” video. i think it is a very cool response.

my wife finds the coolest things.

the image we want? really? post 2 of 2

ronnie floyd gcr

this is a barely connected continuation from my post on being a bad modern baptist.

DISCLAIMER #1 – i know next to nothing about the report i am about to mention.

like i said in yesterday’s post i’m not a good modern baptist. i don’ know who the current SBC or MWBC presidents are and i don’t really care to look them up. i don’t care about the politics of the SBC, though i’m sure they are discussing things that are very important. my focus is on loving my friends who make up tapestry and trying to share that love with those around the world.

which brings me to the screen capture image i posted above. it is from a video report on the great commission resurgence. don’t ask me what the gcr is because i can’t really tell you (remember i’ve already told you i’m a very poor modern baptist). though i’m not sure i get the impression that political elements on one side of the SBC love it and political elements on the other side can’t stand it. i thought i would watch the report video concerning the gcr but i still don’t know what it is really all about. i need someone who can cut through political language and tell me what the debate is really all about. to me it seems like both sides are saying the same things. remember i’m not a good modern baptist. i’m not in the know on any of this.

DISCLAIMER #2 – i don’t know ronnie floyd. he is probably a swell guys so please don’t take any of what i am about to say as a personal attack on him. i am merely talking about his look in regards to old-time versus modern baptist.

so i watched the video and i was immediately struck by the look of the speaker. his name is ronnie floyd and he is the pastor of the first baptist church of springdale. i’ve never met him and i know nothing of him – remember, i’m not a good modern baptist. all i know is that when i watched the video all i could think was “how does this guy’s look convey that we want to do things in a new way”? when i looked at him i thought power, influence, plastic, and baptist stereotype.  AGAIN PLEASE REMEMBER THAT I DON’T KNOW RONNIE FLOYD! i’m sure he is a great guy and that his family, friends, church, and dogs love him. all i know about him is his look and i was wondering if i should believe what was being said about a resurgence based on that look. you can say that’s shallow and you would probably be right. in my defense i will say that there was obviously a lot of time spent in arranging the background of the video and determining the lighting and other attributes of the video so as to convey the message best. therefore the look of the speaker chosen is an important part of the message of the video. “the medium is  the message.”

i thought i would get someone else’s opinion to compare to my own. one of the threads whose opinion i respect greatly is jan. jan likes to call herself tapestry’s house mom. she hasn’t been involved in a church for decades and is not familiar with the evangelical church culture at all. jan came to a worship gathering one night because she was interested in exploring faith and while she doesn’t believe me when i say it she has become one of GOD’s greatest gifts for helping everyone else in tapestry explore their faith in CHRIST. so i sent the above image to jan without any explanation and asked what she thought.

here was her response:

he is dressed meticulously but chose the pink tie to soften the look.  is he wearing lots of makeup?  is his hair real?  is he real?  he looks like one of those TV ministers who are always asking for money!

she said basically what i thinking (except for the pink tie bit – i didn’t even notice it – good catch jan).

from what i saw on the video (without actually knowing if there what the politics are behind it) i would say that i agree with much of what the resurgence report says BUT i still find myself asking does the image of this video actually convey that anything different is being done? i fear it conveys the same old plastic, unreal image that we have been conveying for awhile. is this really the image we want to convey to the world? i think we look our best when we are conveying the loser look of old-time baptists. they were people who agreed on four things and had diversity on so much else. that’s what i want to look like.

hacking

i love it when people make something work rather than buying some prepackaged thing that someone else produces. we (the u.s. of a.) tend to be a nation of consumers rather than producers. that’s why i love it when someone or some organization sees something and say to themselves “i can make something of that or at least make something better.” adam found the above exercise bike on the side of the road and then decided that he could develop a table for it so that he could pedal while he works. adam is a graphic designer so he sits in front of his computer quite a bit. this is the first stage which is merely a mock up to make sure the idea works. i can’t wait to see the final stage.

i wish churches would do more creating rather than consuming. most churches consume programs developed in other regions for other people that have little, if anything, to do with the cultures in which they live in. at their best these programs are used merely as frameworks that are adjusted to the people and culture. at their worst the programs are rigid and the church leadership expects everyone else to adjust to them. i wish we all would create more. this doesn’t mean that everything will be different from church to church but it does mean that a group’s “finger prints” will be all over whatever they do. the programs they use will “look” like them, instead of looking like every other church in the nation that is using that resource. if we don’t feel like we can create something entirely new, we should at least “hack” what we find out there.

i love watching this

two things that i love watching:

  1. several different “threads” doing incredibly significant acts of love and service that they noticed on their own. i can’t tell you the specifics but i can say they are just plain cool. i love being a part of this church.
  2. will ferrell on “man vs. wild” – that was funny t.v.

SIDE NOTE – i had the greatest conversation with jessica lawrence, a co-worker/laborer from baton rouge, today. she and matt are simply amazing people.

aluminum hard case

i’m not usually in the business of selling people’s products for them but this was a good deal and i thought i would pass it on. as a nomadic church (a church without a building) tapestry is always in need of sturdy cases for things. right now i need two cases for the the projectors we use. that’s why i am posting about 1 sale a day. today they are selling aluminium cases with high density foam inserts for $9.99 plus $5.99 s/h. a good enough deal that i solved our projector cases issue by buying two.
