fan versus wild

i like my southern roots and therefore it is with great southern pride that i point you to the following fan versus wild article on southern hospitality and nascar racing.

at 1 o’clock on a bright october afternoon, i’m standing in a convenience store parking lot five miles east of martinsville, va. in the 24 hours before the green flag drops on the subway 500, i need to find a ride to the speedway and a $75 ticket to the sold-out race. problem is, all i have on me is $20, a cell phone and a camcorder. And i’m not allowed to use any media connections to get into the race—or so much as mention the letters espn (at least not in that order).

10 minute film school

this video is great. it’s robert rodriguez talking about how he made his film “el mariachi” for $7,000.00. it went on to gross over $2,000,000 which definitely a pretty good return on investment. i’m just placing this up here since i mentioned in an earlier post that i believe within enough time, creativity, and initiative you can do must anything ministry-wise for very little money. the video is a good example of what i was trying to say. i personally love how he faked machine gun fire.

got game?

i have $40 worth of best buy certificates that are going to go bad soon. i’m thinking that i might buy an xbox 360 game. it turns out that i basically spent my birthday money back in november for my boys to play games they like (i.e. guitar heriii & madden ’08) while i play halo 3. i’m sure i would probably love those games but i really have been that interested in trying them. so i was hoping some of you might have some recommendations. so do any of you have any games that you absolutely love to play?

the shack

one of my weaknesses is that i typically will refuse to look into something that is getting a ton of hype. for example, i will often refuse to read a modern book when i hear every body and their moma talking about how that book is the greatest book around and should be read by everyone. i know it’s a stupid reason not read something that might actually be good but it’s a weakness of mine. i recognize it and i’m working on it.

of course, i’m still working on it and therefore i have ignored the book “the shack.” apparently it is all the rage within CHRISTian circles now. according to one friend (hi drew) it has even been called the “pilgrim’s progress” of our time (of course, drew feels similar to i on this and he made the great observation that john bunyan didn’t have a marketing machine behind “pilgrim’s progress” while “the shack” has a full court press of marketing telling us how life changing it is). it’s really pretty sad because several people that i know, love, and respect have highly recommended the book to me. one of my friends, who i think the world of, even went so far as to give me a copy of it.

still i’m shallow enough to let me desire to buck the system keep me from reading the book. i have at least put the book in my pile of books that i have committed to be read in the near future. it’s probably about eighth on that list right now.

has anyone else read this book?

rsb & american idol

for those who used to be a part of the parkview youth ministry i thought you would get a kick out of knowing that the new american idol commercial has the robbie seay band song “rise” as its background music. rsb did the music for parkview’s 2004 disciplenow. he was a great guy and did some great music but had absolutely no concept of time. you can see the commerical here.

btw, the album that “rise” comes off of the album “give yourself away” which kicks butt.

i'm a ninja! (or soon will be)

i’m very excited. i just bought myself a CHRISTmas present. i just purchased a few tiny tv remotes (which sounds cooler but is $10 more under it’s other name “ninja remote“). it’s a cool little universal television remote that i can use to take control of any tv at a restaurant, waiting room, or (most fun of all) my father-in-law’s house. last year i used my then functioning pocket pc to “possess” my father-in-law’s “pride and joy” television. last CHRISTmas jim (my brother-in-law), jill (his wife), my dad, and i spent 15 minutes entertaining ourselves by randomly switching channels, turning the volume up & down, and turning off my father-n-law’s t.v., while he freaked out about how he was going to have to return the thing for service because it definitely wasn’t supposed to be acting like that. pam completely freaked out about the whole situation but the rest of us had a blast.

since, i bought three of these things, if my brother and brother-in-law are nice i might just send them one each.

she doesn't get it … do we?

first & most important pam is back from the operation smile project she was on in honduras.

secondly, i ran across this today and it made me laugh. it’s an article about ashlee simpson postpoing her new album for fear of going up against american idol singer blake lewis. the part that makes me laugh is a quote from one of ms. simpson’s friends.

ashlee hates american idol, and she thinks the show makes stars out of nobodies, taking credibility away from real musicians

she thinks the show makes starts out of nobodies? apparently she doesn’t remember getting her start because of big sis’ and a reality t.v. show or maybe she’s forgotten about an internet petition to ban her from singing that made the circuit (or maybe she’s forgotten her dad pimping her and her sister out).

it’s sad when you see someone say or do something that is the exact opposite of reality. it’s even sadder when it is a body that is supposed to represent CHRIST. i know we all make mistakes. that’s just a part of the game. the problem to me is not so much when we followers of CHRIST make mistakes but rather when we are not humble enough to admit them or even the possibility of them. i’m not even really talking about sin issues here. rather it’s the egotism that i sometimes see within churches. i believe that JESUS is the way, the truth, and the life but i don’t believe that i understand or know HIM completely. while standing firm in my convictions i want to do so with a sense of humility and not arrogance because the day may come when i find out exactly how far away from GOD’s truth i am. i don’t think humility concerning our beliefs is in opposition to standing firm on our convictions. i believe JESUS (WHO i believe really did know TRUTH perfectly) stood on HIS convictions in humility. HE was able to converse and relate to people who completely disagreed with HIM while treating them with extreme respect. HE used the TRUTH as a means to bring people to the FATHER instead of as a means to pound people into the ground. the only people HE kind of even “pounded” on were the religious ones – who thought they already had the truth all sown up.

i hope we followers of CHRIST will “get it” more often than not.
