touched twice united

disclaimer – i’m on the board of touched twice united so my opinion is slightly biased – of course, it is actually one of the most amazing opportunities you and your church will ever have.

ok, i’ve done my disclaimer now i can speak freely. TOUCHED TWICE UNITED IS AMAZING! it really is a cool way of doing GOD-things.

basically ttu is a way of getting churches, community organizations, and community leaders to work together to help the weakest citizens in their counties. imagine combining a medical, dental, hearing, and vision clinic with any other service you can imagine (beauty salon, oil change service, etc.) and doing it with a $0 budget. that’s part of what touched twice is. churches work together to find people who are already wanting to help their community. the churches also look for ways that are already in their communities of meeting the needs that will be discovered. for example, hold as a part of a vision clinic touched twice gets the lions club involved – those lions love  working with the vision impaired – i know this because my dad used to sale the lions club brooms and lights door to door when he was a lion). another example in wisconsin is the fact that there are free dental supplies that the state will offer to any dentist doing charitable work. there are tons of ways of meeting needs that are already in our communities which are simply not very well known. you get all this together and then provide every person in need who shows up for a clinic an “advocate” who will help them to discover needs, determine what can be done, walk them through the process, and will pray with them.

it’s an amazing thing and did i mention that a touched twice clinic is usually done on a ZERO budget? this is why the national institute of health is interested in it (which should make jonathan wilmore happy). if you’re church is interested in learning more or doing one give me a ring, visit the website (the new one is ttunited.org which will be fully functional by may 1st), or even better yet contact perry polnaszek and let him tell you about ttu. as a group we have a goal of having a clinic in every county in the u.s of a by 2011. it’s a big goal but the clinics are really taking off – which is what usually happens with good ideas.

tapestry is going to be a part of doing one later this year and i’m pretty pumped about.

the last jeremiah paper

IMG_1328_edited-1

my parents, the only people i am sure actually care about posts being place on this blog, will be thrilled to know that today i mailed in the last paper due from my jeremiah seminar. the reason they will be thrilled is because i will now have enough time to post some new things to the blog (mom – you may now cheer).

SIDE NOTE – if you are interested in the paper you can read it here. it’s not one of my better ones so i wouldn’t really put it on a list of recommended reading.

SIDE SIDE NOTE – anyone interested in going to the q ideas conference with me? if you are a church planter or student i know how you can get a $200 discount. even with the discount it still isn’t cheap, but it is a little better.

SIDE SIDE SIDE NOTE – i spoke at uwsp’s intervarsity chapter last night. i was talking about how scripture records that JESUS is “the way, the truth, and the life” BUT it doesn’t not say that our boxed up versions of HIM are “the way, the truth, and the life.” i thought i had a great idea to display video on each side of the stage showing how to make origami boxes and encouraging the students to make such boxes with paper i provided. the idea was to point out at the end how distracting making the box was from what they had really come there to experience. it would have worked a lot better for one side of the room if i had looked at the settings for the projector on that side of the room. we use that projector for reverse projection at tapestry. unfortunately, this was not reverse projection and thus everything was projected on the wall backwards. this made the instructions, and probably the illustration, useless.

need a little help

i need a little help – do any of my ministerial friends know of a source for a for good burial urns for kids?

after months of fighting against a resurgence of leukemia our neighbor’s 9 year old daugther passed away yesterday. pam and i spent some time with them tonight and they are having a hard time finding an urn that they believe would fit their daughter. obviously most urns are designed with older people in mind. they are open to thinking outside the box. if you have an idea please contact me and i will pass it on.

nywc jealousy

i love what i am doing BUT i still miss youth ministry. i don’t want to swap back or anything like that but i miss some of the fun and experiences that are just naturally a part of working with teens. since the only teen we have in tapestry right now is my oldest son i can’t really call that a youth ministry … it’s parenting.

anyhow, a good third of my youth ministry friends have been blogging, twittering, and facebooking about being at one of the national youth workers conventions. i know i’m not supposed to be jealous of people so i’ll just say that i hate all of my friends who got to go to one of the nywc’s. crap … i’m not supposed to do that either. … i strongly dislike my friends who got to go.

pumkin carving night

it was pumpkin carving night at the terrell household. as always it was a ton of fun. i have a pretty great family.

here are some photos from the evening.

SIDE NOTE – i got to do something cool today.

up until last year i have been a youth minister. during my 18 years in youth ministry i have had some parents of students who were incredibly encouraging to me and the staff that i worked with. i know some youth ministers will complain about parents who are pains but my experience was that those parents are few and far between when compared to the encouraging parents.

anyhow, today i got the chance to prove that i learned from my experience with such great families as the pierces, the pyles, the burgers, the wilkinsons, the stines, the armstrongs, the fletchers, the walters, the forts, the austins, the haltoms, the jones, the smiths, the fraziers, etc., etc. (there are more families than i could ever count so know that if you weren’t mentioned you are probably still in the “more than i can count” group). i called up the two youth ministers who lead the youth ministry that adam is involved in (a youth ministry at tapestry is not possible right now because the only adolescent we have is named terrell) and told them that i would either like to take them both out to whatever restaurant they would like or cook jambalaya (thanks again guys and girls for the cooking stuff) for their whole staff. they chose the jambalaya and so i cooked it today and fed everyone over at woodlands church. they lead a great youth ministry and i’m glad adam is involved in it. thanks to all my previous youth ministry parents for teaching me how to treat a youth minister.

some of you helped cook tonight

i just wanted to say “thanks” again to so many of you. when i left parkview a year ago they threw a party (i’m still not sure if it was out of joy or sadness over me leaving). at the end of the party jess, meg, josh, and the parkview youth gave me a jambalaya pot and some fixins. this pot has been used quite a bit since moving to wisconsin.

tonight the pot was used to fix the weekly meal for the “place of peace.” the “place of peace” provides a free meal each week for all who need it. a lot of independent living residents of point go for the meal. i spent most of my day fixing a meal for about 45 people. that would not have even been an option if it had not been for all those who thought of giving me the jambalaya pot. so if you are a part of that group i wanted to tell you that you made dinner for 45 people tonight and it was pretty good.

creation & CHRISTianity – intervarsity

i got the chance to speak at the uwsp chapter of of intervarsity last night. i’m decided to test the new digital recorder we’re using for tapestry and i recorded the message. since i have it recorded i thought i might as well put it up on the blog.

helpful info

i am continually helped in church planting by information designed for small business owners. the two are obviously not the same thing but they do face many of the same challenges. today lifehacker posted a link to their ultimate small business resource guide. some of the things listed are ones that i am already using but i have still found several resources that i will probably start using in the future. it’s well worth a look if your are trying to do impressive things on a small budget.

jesus bobble head

jesus bobble head

for those of you who are wondering i did most definitely buy a JESUS bobble head figure for the “would JESUS be a CHRISTian” message series. the main point of it will be a reminder for everyone that this is not what our LORD should be like. a bobble head JESUS agrees with everything you agree with and disagrees with everything you disagree with because you control HIS head. if you want HIM to agree with something then you just make HIM do it. this means JESUS never finds your personal sin that big of a deal but HE abhors the sins that you have no problem with. no body is every challenged by a bobble head JESUS.

of course the real JESUS isn’t like that. the real JESUS challenges everyone and unfortunately steps on my toes way too often for my tastes.

so i have a bobble head JESUS coming to hold up during the messages as a reminder that our GOD is not like this thing, so we should never treat HIM like HE is a bobble head.

SIDE NOTE – i chatted with my friend josh today. we’ve talked before about his wife and his desire to be a part of GOD planting a new church. last time we talked i thought it was years away. well today i found out it was a year away. that’s right uno! being one year away from planting a church is an amazing time. it calls for a ton of prayer, planning, and most importantly large and small “leaps to faith.” if you have a moment would you lift up josh & kimberly in prayer? i think GOD would be honored if you do.

always fun to find something you’ve done posted by someone else on the web. the above slideshow is found on slideshare. i go there every now and then to get new ideas for more engaging powerpoint presentations. i looked at this slide show out of curiosity and low and behold i ran into my own photos. slides 30 and 36 are from the youth worship service that i used to lead at parkview in baton rouge. it’s fine that the guy used them because i list them as creative commons (though it would have been nice to have been notified). it was fun to randomly run into something that i have done.
