trying to catch up

i’m not blogging as much as i used to and i’m trying to correct it. some of it is that running and photography have been taking up a decent amount of time and therefore i just haven’t had as much wasted time (along with the fact that our church is down by 2 permenant staff members and 2 assistant members thus making the work load more) but allot of it is that i really haven’t had as much to blog about. i haven’t seen anything that i absolutely had to blog about. there have been things that i had thoughts about but not enough to actually write about. for example:

  • i saw a guy who was driving a truck and changing his pullover shirt all while holding a cigarette in his mouth – just picture this for a second and you will understand my amazement – i kept on expecting him to burst into flmes.
  • i continue to hate burger king which has still not responded to my letter.
  • i joined the blockbuster online program last week and i’m pretty psyched about it – we recieved our first movies today. i figure this will help me to reach one of my goals of seeing all the films on the afi’s 100 greatest films list.
  • i’m really proud of pam is going to be dr. pam pretty soon. she’s working her butt off and is about to finish her ph.d.
  • i love youth ministry but i hate the fact that allot of people automatically assume that the youth ministry knows all about recreation. it drives me crazy.
  • thanks to several of y’all responding to my request for help i’ve had several opportunities recently to take people’s portraits and it’s been allot of fun. thanks for helping.
  • i still haven’t finished the da vinci code movie because i was so bored by it that i quit a little over half way through it. i’m not sure i will finish it.
  • i finished lullaby by chuck plalhniuk the other day and it was a very interesting book.

i guess that’s it for now

random thoughts while waiting for the rush of students

parkview school is about to dismiss for the day and thus a swarm of students are about to run into my study. i’m not complaining about this. afterall, these kids are some of the ones that are the purpose of my job. i just realize that i can’t do anything that requires concentration during this time. so now i’m wasting 10 minutes until they get out and the chaos ensues.

so here are a few random thoughts

  • thanks to my plea and a similar plea by my wife i now have two portrait shoots to practice on. cool. i get to try new things. i like that.
  • thanks to laura p. i’ve been asked to speak at a college retreat for zoar baptist. you guys probably don’t know this but speaking a another church is “gravy” for a minister. all the real ministry takes place with you guys. you know if what i say and do are real. everything that i will talk about with zoar will have gone through the filter of your ears. i’ll know if it connected or not based on how you responded. glen, the college minister at zoar, has to do all the hard work. i just walk in there and talk for a little while. like i said it’s gravy.
  • running in cold weather is one of the greatest things ever. i ran 10.4 miles sunday night and barely broke a sweat.
  • i miss snow. a friend has been blogging about snow and it’s made me miss it.
  • if some of you want to help sunday night at the fall festival we could use it. the youth are doing a dunking booth and serving food to raise money for nicaragua.
  • i love ron tyndal, the counselor at our church. he is ine of the greatest people ever.

okay, the rush is about to happen so i’ll end my random thoughts.

insidious maladies

one of the most insidious maladies of our time [is]: the tendency in most of us to observe rather than act, avoid rather than participate, not do rather than do; the tendency to give in to the sly, negative, cautionary voices that constantly counsel us to be careful, to be controlled, to be wary and prudent and hesitant and guarded in our approach of this complicated thing called living

it’s whats for dinner

it's whats for dinner
the dinner plan for tonight was supposed to be me bbq’ing steak for my family. through various scenarios that happened within the day it turned out that it wasn’t going to be best for me to cook out tonight. so instead pam decided to cook chili (which is always awesome). when i told my kids that we weren’t having steak they both jumped for joy.

what have i done wrong in raising my kids? how could i have reared them in such a way that they don’t love steak? it would be okay if they were vegans. it would some how be easier if i knew they had a moral problem with eatting beef. yet, that’s not my kids issue. nope, they simply prefer the taste of ground beef to that of a well cooked rib eye. it doesn’t make any sense to me.

i must have screwed up in raising them. they’ll probably need counseling when they get older.

zorba the greek

(basil) i don’t want any trouble.
(zorba) boss, life is trouble,
only death is not.
to be alive is to undo your belt and look for trouble!

too bad

sorry lsu fans. it just seems like those teams from alabama are always messing things up for y’all. it was a great defensive game. now if only this “teams from alabama beating lsu” trend can continue until bama plays lsu on november 11 everything will be great.

just a few updates

the summer is almost over and this means that life will calm down to the point that i will begin blogging regularly again. for now a few random thoughts.

  • i miss the austins – arnold called today and i got to speak to them for awhile (nothing significant, just talking) and it reminded me of how much i love those people. i’m still very proud of them.
  • having a boat would be allot of fun if it weren’t for all the headache that goes with them. i got to borrow david walters’ boat today and drag some kids around on a psuedo-inner tube (i remember the days when we had to use real inner tubers – and we liked it) and it was allot of fun. if i could just figure out a way to borrow someone else’s boat whenever i liked and let them deal with the headaches that would be cool.
  • i just finished a personal best 3 miler – 29:53. it’s sad to think that next week at my first 5k i will be racing 6 year olds who can beat me.
  • as always the youth ministry’s week in nicaragua was amazing.
  • i have a great wife – yesterday was our 16th anniversary.
  • before i started running i never sweated. now my body has apparently decided to make up for lost time. i sweat like a pig when i run.
  • delta airlines has still not found my piece of luggage that they lost on our return flight from nicaragua.
  • since right before adam was born we have given up television (this includes anything you can do on a t.v. i.e., movies, games, etc.) during the month of august. this month it started a little early because our tv broke. it would cost $250 to have someone repair it but i can buy a $14 repair kit off the internet and do it my self. i’ll be doing this next week.

i guess that’s it for now.

donut day

IMG_0084_edited-1
it’s “donut day” according to our local krispy kreme store. so go celebrate by buying a donut (or getting one free at krispy kreme). i actually prefer meche’s and jay’s donuts to krispy kreme but anytime a donut is free it tastes wonderful.

rock beats scissors

pretty much anytime we have to make a choice between two options within the student ministry we resort to “rock, paper, scissors.” i’ve had many of you people criticize this method and make light of it. yet no more. in this article you’ll find out that a japaneze firm used “rock, paper, scissors” to decided who they would sell 20 million dollars worth of art through. they had to decide between christie’s or sotheby’s and apparently figured that using “rock, paper, scissors” was the best way to make the choice between the two options.

christie’s chose scissors and sotheby’s chose paper. scissors beat paper and thus christie’s will be auctioning some the art this wednesday.

i can’t believe you would ever doubt my methods.

SIDE NOTE – can you believe that there is a world championship of rock, paper, scissors?

it’s a hoax

for theological reasons i’m not a big believer in ghosts but i do understand that other people believe in them. so while i might dismiss ghost stories as stupid i do at least recognize that they are genuine fears for some. because of this i love a good horror flick or discovery channel ghost documentary – kind of horror by proxy, i enjoy the fear because others do. that’s why i was disheartened today when i found out from pam that the whole amityville house of horror story is a complete farce. the story was made up rather than someone genuinely believing in something that i don’t think is possible.

you can read about the hoax here
