lighting

WEEKENDMX_lg

i’m now researching the next big tapestry purchase. truthfully i’m about fed up with buying large items for tapestry, i would much rather use our resources doing something good rather than just buying more equipment. yet i guess this is a part of it all right now. anyhow, we will be meeting in a gym so the lit up ugliness factor of the room is pretty high. i want to reduce this ugliness factor by controlling the lighting and thus i am looking into buying portable lighting. the key concerns here are that the lighting needs to be a good value, rugged, portable, and dependable.

i know next to nothing about lighting (i put some up in the parkview student center and it worked but i think that was luck). right now i’m looking at this set up, the mbt weekender dmx. it’s $823 plus $110 in shipping. oh how i hate spending money like that for lights. still i want to hide as much of the gym ugliness as possible and lighting seems to be the best way to do it.

so blog readers who know a thing or two about lighting (phillip & chester)  lend me your brains. is this a good buy? too much lighting? too little? we’re not going to be doing much with lighting (other than hiding gym ugliness). on and off is a must, dimming would be nice but it’s not essential.  i don’t want to spend any more than this and i would love to spend less. any suggestions?

signage

i’m in the process of having to produce signage for the inside and outside of washington elementary when we are in the building. right now it looks like group imaging is going to offer the best deal for portable and easy to put up signs (but i’m very open to other companies if someone knows a better one).

anyhow here are the two 3’x7’ signs that i will probably be ordering for inside the building. these come with an easily collapsible stand.

any thoughts?

here’s what i’m looking at for the portable sign for outside. it’s 3’x9’ with grommets. woohoo!

rave card

rave card 2

i’m working on a “rave card” (basically a 4”x6” card) to start handing out to people as a reminder of the tapestry launch that is coming up soon (september 14th). once the “rave card” is finished it will probably also turned into some door hangers and perhaps a billboard for a month.

this is just the first mock up of the front of the card. the back will be full of information. the model for the picture is the daughter of one of our friends/neighbors. as you can tell from the look on her face, she’s fun.

i’m just posting this up here to get a few people’s opinion. any thoughts?

purpose

i’m bouncing ideas around in my head at the moment for a launch team (the group that is helping me start tapestry) discussion of the mission of tapestry. the one i like the most right now is that “tapestry exists to show off the grace of GOD.” i just love the idea of us “showing off” what GOD has done and can do.

asus 901

everyone i have talked to concerning planting a portable church has told me to try and have contingency plans for as much as you can. so of this means have duplicates for everything possible. several of the people i have talked to have described how often they have computer problems (laptops take a decent amount of abuse). therefore several have recommended having a second laptop. that’s why i’m looking at an ultra portable for a back up computer. they are extremely small, solid state (thus no moving parts) and relatively cheap. the asus 901 should be coming out in the u.s. this week. depending upon what the street price for this thing ends up being it will probably be the computer i get for tapestry’s spare. it’s a small little bugger that would do everything we need. in fact, i might use it to send out a live feed of the service via the internet.

working on the website

this weekend i spent two more days with pastors. this has been a week of pastors. anyhow, i went to the minnesota/wisconsin baptist convention new pastor orientation. this was basically a group of church planters from all over minnesota and wisconsin finding out what was available within the convention. it was a decent time.

since, getting home i’ve been trying to find out how to establish a random header image on the tapestry website. it took me all night (which is a sad statement on my coding skills) but i finally got the code to work in the manner in which i wanted them to. unfortunately i don’t really have any images that i like for the website but once i do they will appear randomly on the web page header.

SIDE NOTE: i’m working through the idea of setting up paypal as a means for people contributing to tapestry. the ease of use would be cool. the problem is that i’m not sure how you set this up when we don’t exist as a legal entity yet. i guess we would set it up through our sponsor church but i don’t really know. does anyone have any experience in this?
