when it started snowing last week i stopped running. it has been slick enough on the roads and sidewalks when i was just walking my dogs and i was not real excited about the thought of actually running on that stuff. so i stopped. it seemed like a reasonable solution to me. of course, we’re probably going to have a pretty good amount of snow around here and i really want to be ready when jim and jill come up here to run the green bay marathon (my brother-n-law and his wife are, to quote my 13 year old, “beast mood” and therefore i need to be in shape when they get up here). this means that i need to train and training means that i need to run.
i mentioned my problem to one of the guys that i play basketball with and he immediately sent me after yaktrax. these thing a combination of rubber bands and metal springs. i guess they work pretty much like tire chains for your feet. all i know is that they work. i’ve run 6 miles in them now and have felt safe during ever stride.
Great thing is that they work to -41 degrees. Now you won’t have an excuse not to run.
Take a picture…..I must see these. Any runner training in your climate should get a medal just for going outdoors.
nevermind, i failed to see that you had a link to the picture. pretty cool
Yeah, Robert is pretty much a beast! Running in a blizzard and then shoveling the driveway until after midnight all in the same day. He’s going have the cardiac fitness of a 15 y/o.
Only his mother could get away with saying, “then it will match his mentality”. Only a 15 y/o would want to run in a driving snow. 🙂
I must say just being outside in that weather qualifies you as a “beast”. By the way – the contraption you described takes me back to the good ‘ol sheep herding days. One ice storm was so bad that my brother & I could literally not walk to feed the sheep, which made carrying a 5 gal bucket of grain even trickier. We made a contraption using plywood, and screwing screws through it, then tying them onto our boots with twine. Not as sophisticated as your new toy, but got the job done nonetheless!
I used yaktrax last year in colorado. now they need to make them for bassets. I think if i were you i’d either join a gym or invest in a treadmill
i would have to buy them just because of the name.
