google cloud connect

i have been a big fan of google docs for quite sometime. we at tapestry have used the collaborative nature of of google docs for many projects. we used it for the development of our church constitution and we are using it right now in a sermon preparation project. yesterday i found out about google cloud connect which is a plugin that allows you to work in microsoft office products over the google cloud. i’m going to be trying this over the next few weeks to see how it works.

ahhhh! my phone wallpapers

up until last month our cell phone service have been through alltel. we are no longer with alltel but it is through no choice of our own. instead, alltel sold their central wisconsin contracts to a new regional company, element mobile. the transition has not been easy. i’ve spent about 3 1/2 hours in one of their stores trying to get our old alltel phones to work on element mobile’s system. it never worked and so element mobile finally gave us new phones. it has been a royal headache. our contract ends in august and i’ll be reconsidering who we do business with then.

anyhow, my new phone is the samsung messager and which has a touch screen. i’m a cheap cell phone guy so this is step up for me on phones. this is the first touch screen phone i’ve had. i’m pretty pumped about the fact that i have three desktops on it that can have a different wallpaper on each one. a big thanks to kris legg for posting these wonderful phone wallpapers. i love it when talented people share their gifts with others.

student tech

i’m helping pam with her graduate student orientation this friday. she wants me to discuss web technologies that can help students. here’s the list that i am going through

anybody have any other recommendations? any other cool web, computer, and/or phone programs that you use?

qr code

qrcode-sptapestryon a lark today i setup a qr code for the tapestry website. in theory you should be able to point your smart phone at this image, scan it with a qr code app and then automatically be taken to the church website.  the problem is that i don’t own a smart phone so i can’t really check it out. even if i did have a smart phone i’m not sure how effective it is to even have a qr code. still i think tapestry is the first church in wisconsin to have its own qr code and it was free. woohoo! now my life is complete 🙂

the only thing that i have actually thought of doing with it is beginning to place it on various posters i make for the few special tapestry gatherings we do every now and then. i might also have some stickers made that i can place on various things in hopes that someone discovers them and scans them. i might set it up to a special qr code page on the church website just so the people who use it feel special. i like for geeks to feel special. it makes me feel special.

of course, i might just make it link to this.

my geek chart

ratterrell’s geek chart

geek chart maps out your online social content and displays it. apparently i am much more prolific on my blog and twitter than anything else. i think when they add facebook the leading percentage will change. this is because of the fact that everything i do online links back to my facebook account.

SIDE NOTE – anyone interested in teaming up with me to run the Fall 50? i’m training for the chicago marathon on october 11th and therefore don’t think i could get ready for a 50 miler two weeks afterward. however, i would love to run this race with a team. we can have from 2-5 people. my hope is for 3-5. anyway, it would be cool to run an ultramarathon even if it is only as a relay. if you are interested or have a team that needs a slow member, then let me know.

SIDE SIDE NOTE – i think all my missouri friends will enjoy knowing that we have wild rhubarb growing in our backyard. i don’t really care for rhubarb pie so we will just use the plants for ornamental purposes.

dropbox

okay – i’m sold on dropbox. 2 gb of free webspace and synchronizes any computers i have linked to it. perfect for keeping tapestry files the same on the desktop and laptop. it works real well for me working on a file that will be used at one of our sunday evening gatherings and automatically having that file updated on the other computers. it’s a cool thing.

if you need some of your files to be the same on multiple computers it is a great way to do it. if you decide to try it out, please let me know first. if i send you an invite and you register i get an additional 250 mb of space.

it worked

two weeks ago i posted about sending a usb hub back to the manufacturer to get them to replace it or throw it away. i’m glad to report that kikkerland sent me a new one. it cost me $1.25 to mail it back to kikkerland and a handwritten note asking them to stand behind the product or throw it away for me but i now have a new working usb hub.

SIDE NOTE – 1st question – anyone interested in a little bracket competition for the ncaa tournament?

SIDE SIDE NOTE – 2nd question – anyone in stevens point interested in forming a team for this year’s trivia contest?

stand up for your product or throw it away

usb port man

awhile back i read this article at lifehacker (which you should add to your rss reader right now). basically it recommended sending broken beyond warranty stuff back to the manufacture instead of just throwing it away. if it’s just small stuff it won’t cost you much and there is apparently a pretty decent chance that you will get something back. so i’m trying this out today. i bought the above usb hub for one of our computers about 7 months ago. the other day it decided to stop working. the warranty was only 3 months but surely it should have lasted longer. so i’m sending it back to kikkerland to see if they will stand behind their product or not.

we’ll see what happens.

curling smack

this is great. it’s a curling blog and about 3/4s of the way down this post they make the following statement concerning the video of me curling that i posted for arnold:

Come on Robert, your pal Arnold expects more than this

that’s right my second year skills were trashed on by people that i don’t even know. i’ll admit that it was a rough night (we were killed – 12 to 2) but i wasn’t expecting to be randomly slammed by strangers. the curling world used to be so much nicer.
