mhmmmmmmmmm

besides seeing my family in alabama the best part of heading down south is the food. i prefer so much of wisconsin over the south. i would rather have a supper cold & dry winter than i terribly hot and humid summer. i would rather go fishing on rivers that require canoes than boats. i would choose wisconsin cheese over whatever southern cheese there is (probably velveeta). etc., etc. on 90% of the comparisons it is really easy to choose wisconsin over the south.

yet that changes dramatically when we start talking about food. i think i probably gained 10 lbs from all the food i ate. i know for a fact that i ate lunch at two different places on one day just because i was afraid i wouldn’t get to eat at either of them again during the week. it’s not even just the nice restaurants that i love. some of the fast food restaurants and “mom and pop” joints are my favorite places to eat. raising cane’s, dempsey’s las trace amigos, chick-fil-a, deanies, wintzel’s, etc. oh how i love these places.

she's a red squirrel

pam invented the greatest phrase today. the phrase is “she’s a red squirrel.”

it happened this way.

we love the squirrels in wisconsin. we have HUGE gray squirrels, which almost ever place has, but in addition to the grays we also have blacks squirrels and red squirrels. the black ones are a color variation of the typical gray squirrel. pam and i think they look like russian relatives of the gray squirrel. the red squirrels are about 1/3 the size of your typical gray squirrel. they are just a little bigger than a chipmunk. the red squirrels also are about the fastest things you have ever seen. they bounce all over the place. we all love watching them in the back yard. they run from one spot to the next and then back to their original spot. adam once described them as squirrels with attention deficit disorder junked up on speed. it’s a pretty accurate description.

anyhow pam was describing someone today that is a friend of hers. i’ve never met this lady so pam was giving me a brief run down of her personality. somewhere during her attempt she finally said “she’s a red squirrel.”

i instantly knew what pam’s friend was like. i can’t wait to get back to wisconsin and use this phrase.

pushing my mother over the edge

i have news for those of you following the “my mom likes grant’s blog better than mine” fact. my mother just admitted it!

that’s right she just said out loud that she prefers reading grant’s blog to reading her oldest son’s blog. how sad is that?

clive's adventure

clive's adventure from 2007

i have a gnome friend, his name is clive. he joined the terrell household while we were living in baton rouge. when i announced to parkview that i was leaving to move up to wisconsin to plant a church eric landy, one of the teens in the youth ministry, stole clive and took him on a little adventure. he drove clive around baton rouge and took pictures of clive doing pretty typical baton rouge things (like going to death valley, visiting the state capitol, visiting the art center, eating at cane’s, or seeing the mississippi river). i’ve been meaning to post the photos for a year and a half and i finally got around to it.

clive's adventure from 2007clive's adventure from 2007

SIDE NOTE – we arrived in alabama, said hi to my parents, went to sleep, and then went to eat mexican food – mhmmmm. during the dinner conversation i found out that my mom likes reading grant’s blog better than mine. this hurts.

sunday @ tapestry

i want to let all my fellow tapestrites know that perry polnaszek is speaking at tapestry sunday night. perry is the planter and pastor of fellowship church in chippewa falls as well as the co-founder of touched twice united (a very cool ministry opportunity that we at tapestry will have a chance to be a part of later). perry has JESUS all over him. if you are in point this weekend i would highly encourage you to come hear perry. in fact, i’m a little jealous that i won’t get to hear him.

SIDE NOTE – if you’re interested in joining a ncaa basketball tournament bracket now is the time to do it. tapestry’s bracket can be found facebook. just go to my profile, if we’re not friends already then send me a friend request, and then look on my profile sidebar. or let me know and i’ll send you an invite.

turning aside

pam and i meet with a group of friends every monday night to eat dessert and help each other follow JESUS more closely (the church phrase for this is “small group” or “life group”). it’s great. tonight we all started going through “the life you always wanted” by john ortberg. the book is about spiritual practices and is kind of a lighter version of richard foster’s classic “the celebration of discipline.” i think it is going to be awesome 1) because i really like the group and 2) i really connected with the 1st chapter. it was basically all about the story of moses and the burning bush. ortberg points out that the story hinges around moses “turning aside” or noticing that GOD’s presence was there. so that’s what we are trying to do this week – “turn aside” or notice that GOD is there. we discussed a few basic ways of doing this. my manner of choice was to blog about it. therefore, along with the other random things that i post i will be throwing out my “turning asides” for the week.

SIDE NOTE – an open letter to the one who parked in spot #95 before me.

dear previous spot 95 parker,

thanks!

thanks for leaving your parking spot while there was still time on the meter. you see, i didn’t have enough change to place in the meter to cover the time i was going to be in the university center. i knew i was going to go over the time i would be able to purchase with the dime and a nickel i had on me and as a result i was fairly sure that i would get a ticket. i was just going to have to chance it but thanks to you leaving your paid for spot an hour and two minutes before your allotted time i didn’t have to worry with a ticket or even parting with my 15¢.

you’re the best oh wonderful previous parker.

if there is anything i can ever do to repay you for your generosity in parking meter time i will gladly do it. in fact, i will try to “pay it forward” by paying for a couple of other people’s parking.

your parking buddy,

robert
