deer hide inspiration

Deer Hides

ok, i’m going to start this by admitting that i know this is a bit off. the above photo is from the lions club building that is on the main stevens point area drag. it is exactly what it looks like. the lions club is seeking to raise funds to take kids to their lions club camps by getting people to donate the hides from the deers that they kill during hunting season. i think it’s brilliant and extremely creative. someone in the lions club realized that they could take something most people throw away or at the most turn into fleet farm for a $10 gift card and use it to raise funds for accomplishing their mission. apparently it is working because the box keeps filling up. this is not your traditional way of accomplishing an organization’s goal and that is what i love about it.

if only the church could be this creative. if only tapestry can be this creative. well maybe as creative as the spirit of the deer hide gathering. i’m not real sure that i want to go about collecting deer hides.

random things – 12.14.2008

just typing a few random things:

  • even though it’s not official yet it appears that i have beat my brother in the semi-finals of our family’s fantasy football league. i just wanted to point out that he should not feel like a complete loser just because i have smashed his face into the ground!
  • i received my rapala rewards stuff yesterday: stainless steel pliers, fishing clippers, rattlin’ rapala sinking lure, and a sticker. woohoo! i love free stuff. it’s great when you get promo stuff for something that you were going to buy anyway.
  • how did the packers go from the nfc championship last year to not even making it into the playoffs this year? argh!
  • walking the dogs today i found a new coat, a new pair of socks, a new scarf, a new pair of yaktraks, and a torn package for a hitachi 160 gb portable hardrive. this is not typical stuff to find on the side of the road and i thought it might have been thrown out from a break-in. so i called the sheriffs’ department. they came, picked up the stuff and said it did seem like the type of stuff that would be dropped off from a break-in. the deputy also added that there had been some car break-ins recently so he would check the stuff to see if it matched any of the break-in losses. of course, i quickly said that if no one came in for the yaktraks then i would like to claim them.
  • i have a love/hate relationship with the book of jeremiah. while i really love some of the point of the book, jeremiah’s constant wailing really grates my nerves. the crying prophet … sometimes i just want to scream “get a backbone!” there are some biblical figures that i would love to hang out with and others that i’m fairly sure i wouldn’t connect with as well. i tend to think jeremiah would be on the “not connecting” list. this is all the worse since my next seminar at nobts is on the book of jeremiah.
  • is anyone else with a wordpress blog experiencing problems with the “now reading” plugin?
  • the two videos that i used at tapestry 12.14.2008 are below

the gobo in action

the gobo sign

some of you are probably tired of me talking about the gobo sign but i thought for those that were still interested i would post a final photo showing how it worked. i still have to fine tune it a little to get rid of a small amount of blurriness but i was still pleased with it. you can now definitely tell that we are in the building. in fact, you can see the "light" sign from further away than you can see our normal sign when we have daylight.

i think the thing that excited me the most was what pam heard when she was driving a few students in from the uwsp campus. when the students saw the sign they screamed out "we have a tapestry sign" and "i love our sign." of course, they then also said that we need a theme song. do churches have theme songs? what would a church theme song sound like? when would we use a church theme song? these are questions that need an answer.

luminaries

IMG_1037_edited-1

the above photo is not a wonderful picture of them but pam came up with a great idea for our house tonight. we both love luminaries and she thought we should use the snow to our advantage by poking a hole in the snow and then placing a candle in the hole to act as a luminary for when people came over for the tapestry CHRISTmas hot drink night (which was a lot of fun). it looked great.

when i was a kid i loved riding over to my paternal grandparent’s neighborhood during CHRISTmas because so many of the neighbors put out luminaries along their street. even as an 8 year old boy i thought it was pretty.

now for the fun of it i am going to experiment with some ice luminaries.

tell me all your thoughts on GOD

sunday at tapestry we’re discussing luke 2:21-40. i know it doesn’t initially look like an incarnational passage of scripture but i am convinced it is.

so i was wondering if any of you wold share your stream of thought when you here the word “incarnation?” i’m not just looking for church answers here. anything is cool. for those unfamiliar with the word a dictionary definition of the word is:

  1. the act of incarnating.
  2. the condition of being incarnated.
  3. incarnation CHRISTianity. The doctrine that the SON of GOD was conceived in the womb of mary and that JESUS is true GOD and true man.
  4. a bodily manifestation of a supernatural being.
  5. one who is believed to personify a given abstract quality or idea.
  6. a period of time passed in a given bodily form or condition: hopes for a better life in another incarnation.
    from answers.com

obviously i’m not looking for a dictiionary definition because i just gave you one. i’m interested in hearing people’s thoughts when they hear or think about the word.

any help here, be it from religious or non-religious sources, would be appreciated.

CHRISTmas hot drink night @ the terrell’s

just wanted to remind everyone that it’s tapestry’s CHRISTmas hot drink night at the terrell’s tomorrow night. this means that we will have coffee, hot chocolate, wassail (oh yeah wassail – whatever that is), etc. we’ll also have some finger foods and decently nice people to hang around with. it’s from 6:30-9:00p.m. and it’s come and go so just show up whenever you can. the address is 3311 arbor vitae lane, plover (i’m so nice i’ve even included a google maps link for you here). i’ll be at debot circle at 6:00 pm to pick up anyone who needs a ride. if you do need a ride please message me just so i know that i have enough space in our sexy silver minivan. if you know of someone else who would like to come over then bring ’em. the more the merry is what pam and i think.

if you want to bring gloves or socks to donate to operation bootstrap that would be cool but you don’t have too.

the gobo sign

the tapestry sign problem has basically been solved now.

as i posted before the signage i purchased for tapestry has been rendered null and void by the fact that it is dark in stevens point by the time we start our gatherings. if you were trying to find tapestry based on signs you were out of luck. this is a problem because i would like for new people to come to tapestry.

DSC_0010_edited-1today i received the answer to our problem. it’s a gobo (i received the projector for the gobo last week). the gobo is a a small image engraved onto mirrored glass (seen to the right) that is then projected through to place the image on a flat surface. i tried the projector out last week with one of the sample gobo’s they sent along with the projector (i used the sample gobo that read “welcome” because it seemed liked a better fit than the one that read “on sale”). today the real gobo arrived and we will be ready to rock and roll come sunday. once it is put into position it will be about 10’ across and very visible from the road.

here’s what it looks like when used in the man cave.

of course, now i have to build a weather proof shelter for the projector. i tried the projector out last sunday and the light doesn’t act very friendly with snow.
