my cute wife & her bad back – part two

i posted concerning this yesterday but i took pam to her neurosurgeon, dr. rado, today and things have changed rapidly. pam’s neurosurgeon rushed her in today because it was his opinion that she should not be experiencing as much pain as she has been. the last time he saw her was in february and he said that the symptoms she was now describing meant that the situation had most likely gotten worse. so instead of seeing her on june 17th he arranged for her to come in today.

after doing a few basic tests he determined that not only was pam’s left leg numb (which we knew) but that she had already lost a reflex in that same leg (which we didn’t know). this most likely means that more of the disc has herniated and is pressing strongly against a nerve. because of this pam’s neurosurgeon changed his previous opinion concerning conservative treatment and stated that such treatment is no longer in pam’s best interests. pam will have an additional mri monday to verify what dr. rao believes to be true and pending the results of the mri pam will have surgery on her back wednesday. the plan is to go in and remove a little bone to enable access to the herniated disk and then remove the herniated portion of the disk. after the surgery pam’s recovery should take around 2-3 weeks. at least that’s the game plan for right now.

birthday redux

today is actually my dad’s birthday. he is a great dad and therefore deserves a wonderful b’day. happy birthday you old fart.

my cute wife & her bad back

i thought i would update you guys on pam and her back.

pam made it home from brazil and the combination of travel and the plane ride tore her back up. around friday of last week the pain became so bad that she was reduced to laying on her side. we’ve gone back to the orthopaedic medical doctor and have been told the next steps are to do another epidural injection and schedule an appointment with an neuro surgeon for a check up and to prepare for the possibility that the epidural injection doesn’t work.

life for pam is pretty boring right now. she is in constant pain if she is in any other position other than laying on her side. so she has laid on her side since friday while getting up every now and then just to stretch. she has already stated that she is real thankful that she was never placed on bed-rest when she was pregnant with the boys. she hasn’t been out of the house since saturday and is going a little stir crazy. who can blame her?

pam is not to the point of surgery yet but that could be coming. the good news is that the surgery is pretty minor for back surgery. what minor means here is that it does not involving fusing anything or 6 months of rehab. we’re not there yet but it is nice to know that if things don’t improve then it is an option that apparently works almost immediately. it is pam’s and my own view that surgery should always be a last option so we’re trying to avoid it if it is possible.

pam's brazil update

most of y’all have probably seen this already but i thought i would post it for anyone who hasn’t. pam is in brazil presently working through things to lead a study abroad there next summer. here’s her update on how things are going.

A quick note. My converter is not working (blew a fuse and knocked the power out of my whole wing of the second floor today) so therefore I am having to use the lobby computer and not my low-battery laptop, so this will be short. Arrived yesterday and went to see the Opera House, Botanical Gardens, Tangua Park, Osca Niemeyer art museum, and out to eat in the little Italy of Curitiba (lots of European immigrants here). Like no Italian food I´ve ever eaten!! No menu. You sit and they just start bringing platter after platter of food and then walking around with all kinds of meat on swords (just like the pseudo-Brazilian rest. in the US) and pasta dishes…fried chicken, spaghetti bolognese, spaghettis with olive oil and garlic, sausage, beef, grilled chicken, salad, potato casserole stuff, risotto, polenta, and my favorite–looked like steak fries but it was a kind of fried cornbread. Yummy! They also wanted me to try this local juice that everyone loves that they had in the lobby…passion fruit. I took a little cup and drank it on down and it burned like fire. I asked what it was again and they said passion fruit juice…oh, and vodka. Thanks for the heads up! It was the saki of Brazil.

Today we drove to Morretes which is a big tourist area in the Braciosas Mountains—just beautiful!! We took a gondola ride down the river and walked around. There was a street performer and we ate traditional Brazilian food—barreado (shredded beef, flour and spices cooked in a dutch oven for 24 hours—good!), rice, falafa (bacon and flour–disgusting!), the best bananas I have ever eaten, bread, salad, frango (thin lightly fried and delicious chicken breast), steak, potatoes, some fried vegetable with no translation, etc. It was all very good except the bacon stuff. Then we went back to the house of Rita~s art friend, whom I met last night when we stopped at her house to pee (yes that was the sole reason for our visit!) because she made brigadeto for us. It´s a traditional Brazilian dessert and they taught me how to make it. Condensed milk, butter, and cocoa cooked together, rolled into balls, and dipped in chocolate sprinkles. We drank coffee and ate brigadeto and cake while watching the sunset on the terrace of a local artist. How cool and cosmopolitan is that!?

I´m working on Portuguese, but it is very difficult. At the end of the day I am too tired to try. Tomorrow I go to the hospital in the morning and the university in the afternoon. Rita, the speech pahtologist here, is getting her Ph.D. in linguistics. They need a native English speaker for some research project so I am going to be a research subject tomorrow. How cool is that!? My back is holding up. I had to do some Lamaze breathing in the airport a couple of times because I was hurting so bad, but as long as I don´t have to stand too long I´m okay. Walking is a little better, but standing is painful.

Love you all—more later,]Pam

the test
as many of you know the terrell familly lives in a late 70s two-story split-level house. i mention late 70s in the description because we have been dealing with some of the decorating decisions from that era. slowly but surely we are bringing the house into the 21st century.

one of the projects that will happen this summer is the affordable update of the boy’s restroom. we have to replace the floor, the shower, the sink, etc. we’ve been looking into a slate floor. pam, the boys, and i all like slate for the floor. we were going to start until we thought that slate might absorb the stinky biological waste liquid that the boys release in their restroom. you see 12 and 15 year old boys don’t always have the best aim. therefore, a little splatter can happen. we clean it all the time but we are scared that slate may be more porous than tile and therefore absorb some of this lemon colored liquid and produce a foul odor that no amount of cleaning will correct. after researching the problem on the net the best advice was to have a trial run with one slate tile and one ceramic tile. therefore we have two tiles that are being “tested” for a couple of weeks to determine which one will stay clean the best.

you can guess for yourself how we are testing them.

aunt lynn

hey guys & gals would read this blog. if you have a moment i would appreciate your prayers for my aunt lynn. she’s my dad’s only sister and is a pretty cool aunt. right now she is dealing with the possibility of liver cancer and will be receiving the final testresults monday. my family and i would greatly appreciate anybody’s prayers. thanks.

pretty proud of my oldest young man

i’m pretty proud of this young man. he is growing into quite the young gentleman.

mmmmmmmmmm

gumbo

thanks to a little help our friend sharon walters pam has now learned how to make spectacular gumbo. mmmmmmmm, its good. nothing quite like a hot bowl of gumbo on a cold day.

many of you may not know this but i married the best cook i have ever known. i didn’t plan it out. in fact, when we married pam wasn’t an incredible cook. don’t get me wrong, she was a good cook then, but i didn’t know that she would turn into an amazing cook. the best part of all is that she gets better and better each year. she finds herself a challenging course and then slowly but surely figures out a way to cook it and improve upon it.

the good news for the tapestry leadership team is that there is a good chance that at least some of the gumbo will be left for our thursday night meeting. that is if i don’t eat it all.

pamandi

24 years ago today pam and i went out on our first date. it was actually a double date with two high school friends (eric erbskorn and amy carpenter – now amy fallin). we celebrated by going out for lunch – woohoo! on a whole, i would say that date worked out pretty well.

SIDE NOTE – i also caught my first fish of 2009 today and got yet another chance to go cross country skiing – making it 4 days in a row that i have done so.

the first '09 fish pam cross country skiing at iverson

not so much

bright and early tomorrow morning i will leave for new orleans for my class for this trimester. i will go from a beautiful snow covered land of 15° to a swamp of 44° (present temp on both). don’t get me wrong, i like louisiana and i love the poeple there, but I LOVE WISCONSIN and of course i love the people here too.

anyhow, i promise you that during my stay in NOLA i will be jokingly asked several times, “aren’t you glad to be down here where it’s warm?” i’ll smile back, be nice to them, and probably even nod a little but the real answer is that i love the winter here in wisconsin. yes it gets cold but that’s small price to pay for ice fishing, curling, sledding, and snow skiing. for example, this afternoon pam and i had an hour before we needed to leave for tapestry so we decided to go cross country skiing in the woods behind our house. that’s right! we didn’t have to travel, there was no cost, and it really wasn’t a big todo. we just grabbed our stuff and walked out our back door.

so while i am going to be pumped about seeing some people that i love (i get to stay at josh’s, which is always a blast), i am definitely not going to be excited about being in the warm, humid weather. instead i will probably be thinking, “if this was in wisconsin i could go skiing after class.”

here are a few photos from this afternoon. jealous?
