the most intersting board meeting

roofing & board meeting
saturday i was a part of the most interesting board meeting i’ve ever been in. part of this is because i love the organisation. it is touched twice united. obviously i believe in ttu’s mission since i am on the board and since tapestry is going to be leading a ttu clinic in august. i love being a part of the ttu meetings because they invariablly end up being events where GOD is bragged on. every time i am at one of the ttu meetings i always hear great stories concerning amazing things that GOD is doing through HIS people. they are great.

the second reason i liked this meeting was because i took part in it while i was helping some friends roof their house. the holte’s are re-decking and roofing their house and i helped them saturday morning while participating in the ttu board meeting over my cell phone.

it was one of the few meetings in my life that i actually enjoyed. i think sometime i may purposefully schedule a meeting for while we roof a house.

not a sport for me

i could never do this because, as anyone who knows me can tell you, i have really weak shins. it’s a curse.

SIDE NOTE – i promise that i actually know when my dad’s birthday is.

a couple of years ago i went through two years of forgetting to call my parent’s on their birthdays. it was awful. i felt absolutely terrible. i know when their birthdays are but for some reason i forgot to call on two occasions. i like to blame it on all the junk that was going on at my former church/work but the truth is it was my fault. my parents deserve better than that. that’s why i put my parents’ birthdays on my google calendar and set google calendar to send me a text message reminder before each birthday. i received the reminder for dad’s birthday last night and since i usually receive these text message reminders one day before an event i immediately posted something on my blog and called mom and dad’s house to leave a message on their voice mail. i’m not sure how i started thinking it was june 5th. my mom even emailed me saying “your dad’s birthday is on june 5th.” for some reason i just thought mom was just sending kenny (my brother) and i a reminder of dad’s birthday. i actually mentally congratulated myself for beating my mom to the punch. it wasn’t until around lunch that i finally realized that it is may 29th and not june 5th. stupid! that’s what they call me.

anyhow, my dad’s birthday is on june 5th if you want to wish him happy birthday on the right date.

pam is back

pam is back from brazil so life is back to normal. ah normality. it is wonderful.

SIDE NOTE – i am ready for the cavs to loose to the magic. i’m just getting a little tired of the lebron love-fest. i think some of the commentators should just go ahead and kiss lebron james on the lips. it’s pretty obvious that is what they are desiring to do. he is an amazing player. there is no doubt about that. yet there are other players on the court and it seems a little strange to brag so much on a player whose team is losing 3 games to 2.

current reading

for some reason my “now reading” plugin is no longer working with my wordpress install. therefore i’ll just post about what i am reading until i find a plugin that works for me (if you have a recommendation i’ll gladly take it). so here goes the recent and current ones:

  • surprised by hope” by n.t. wright – i love n.t. wright’s way of thinking about things. this work is a great way of refocusing CHRISTians on the resurrection or as wright puts it “life after, life after death. wright does a great job of explaining why the resurrection should direct who CHRISTians are in the present age. “surprised” was so good that i’ll probably read wright’s “the resurrection of the SON of GOD” even though it is a mammoth book.
  • the brief and frightening reign of phil” by george saunders – a quick and fun read. very kurt vonnegut-esque. an interesting parable of how fear can be used to manipulate people into doing things they would never normally agree to.
  • JESUS for president” by shane claiborne & chris haw- i finished this book 11 days short of a year but it didn’t take that long because of it being boring. it was quite good. the design and typography is unlike much i’ve seen (reminded me of “house of leaves“). absolutely amazing book on living in the kingdom versus living in the empire. “J4p” is claiborne’s most blatant and powerful argument yet for CHRISTian pacifism. i think my favorite part is claiborne’s discussion concerning “building the kingdom.” you’ll hear this phrase around many different ministries. it’s pretty egotistical to think that we can “build the kingdom” for GOD. we get to work “with” HIM as HE establishes HIS kingdom, we don’t build it for HIM.
  • currently reading – “omnivore’s dilemma” – i’m 3/4’s through and i think this will be one of those books that changes the way i live. “the jungle” started freaking me out concerning “industrialized meat” and this book has pushed me even further down this path. pam and i have already discussed moving towards grass fed beef and chicken and now thanks to michael pollan we are going to start making the jump. don’t worry mom and dad we aren’t becoming hippies and joining a commune – yet. 🙂
  • currently reading – “pagan CHRISTianity: exploring the roots of our church practices” by frank viola and george barna – i’m probably 1/3 through this book. not sure how i feel about it yet. i think viola and barna raise some reall good and important points but make some very dubious assumptions concerning those points. in particular i think they often confuse extra-biblical with unbiblical. i’m not far enough into the book yet to really make a good call on the book so we’ll see what happens as i get further into it.

i should finish the “omnivore’s dilemma” tomorrow or thursday and then will start reading shane hipps’ “flickering pixels: how technology shapes your faith.” i really enjoyed what hipps said at Q so i am pretty excited about reading this.

SIDE NOTE – i watched “taken” with the boys tonight and my word! it’s an awesome action flick. interesting story and tons of action.

SIDE SIDE NOTE – the nba playoffs are amazing this year.

pam's brazil update

most of y’all have probably seen this already but i thought i would post it for anyone who hasn’t. pam is in brazil presently working through things to lead a study abroad there next summer. here’s her update on how things are going.

A quick note. My converter is not working (blew a fuse and knocked the power out of my whole wing of the second floor today) so therefore I am having to use the lobby computer and not my low-battery laptop, so this will be short. Arrived yesterday and went to see the Opera House, Botanical Gardens, Tangua Park, Osca Niemeyer art museum, and out to eat in the little Italy of Curitiba (lots of European immigrants here). Like no Italian food I´ve ever eaten!! No menu. You sit and they just start bringing platter after platter of food and then walking around with all kinds of meat on swords (just like the pseudo-Brazilian rest. in the US) and pasta dishes…fried chicken, spaghetti bolognese, spaghettis with olive oil and garlic, sausage, beef, grilled chicken, salad, potato casserole stuff, risotto, polenta, and my favorite–looked like steak fries but it was a kind of fried cornbread. Yummy! They also wanted me to try this local juice that everyone loves that they had in the lobby…passion fruit. I took a little cup and drank it on down and it burned like fire. I asked what it was again and they said passion fruit juice…oh, and vodka. Thanks for the heads up! It was the saki of Brazil.

Today we drove to Morretes which is a big tourist area in the Braciosas Mountains—just beautiful!! We took a gondola ride down the river and walked around. There was a street performer and we ate traditional Brazilian food—barreado (shredded beef, flour and spices cooked in a dutch oven for 24 hours—good!), rice, falafa (bacon and flour–disgusting!), the best bananas I have ever eaten, bread, salad, frango (thin lightly fried and delicious chicken breast), steak, potatoes, some fried vegetable with no translation, etc. It was all very good except the bacon stuff. Then we went back to the house of Rita~s art friend, whom I met last night when we stopped at her house to pee (yes that was the sole reason for our visit!) because she made brigadeto for us. It´s a traditional Brazilian dessert and they taught me how to make it. Condensed milk, butter, and cocoa cooked together, rolled into balls, and dipped in chocolate sprinkles. We drank coffee and ate brigadeto and cake while watching the sunset on the terrace of a local artist. How cool and cosmopolitan is that!?

I´m working on Portuguese, but it is very difficult. At the end of the day I am too tired to try. Tomorrow I go to the hospital in the morning and the university in the afternoon. Rita, the speech pahtologist here, is getting her Ph.D. in linguistics. They need a native English speaker for some research project so I am going to be a research subject tomorrow. How cool is that!? My back is holding up. I had to do some Lamaze breathing in the airport a couple of times because I was hurting so bad, but as long as I don´t have to stand too long I´m okay. Walking is a little better, but standing is painful.

Love you all—more later,]Pam

my geek chart

ratterrell’s geek chart

geek chart maps out your online social content and displays it. apparently i am much more prolific on my blog and twitter than anything else. i think when they add facebook the leading percentage will change. this is because of the fact that everything i do online links back to my facebook account.

SIDE NOTE – anyone interested in teaming up with me to run the Fall 50? i’m training for the chicago marathon on october 11th and therefore don’t think i could get ready for a 50 miler two weeks afterward. however, i would love to run this race with a team. we can have from 2-5 people. my hope is for 3-5. anyway, it would be cool to run an ultramarathon even if it is only as a relay. if you are interested or have a team that needs a slow member, then let me know.

SIDE SIDE NOTE – i think all my missouri friends will enjoy knowing that we have wild rhubarb growing in our backyard. i don’t really care for rhubarb pie so we will just use the plants for ornamental purposes.

a busy example

thought this was funny considering my last post.

i had a conversation with someone today concerning hostas. the person i had the conversation with is an amazing gardener. i on the other hand am just a person trying to have a decently respectable yard – and i’m pretty much failing at that goal. anyhow in the process of the discussion composting was mentioned and i stated that i had begun doing it. she then declared that she was too busy to do composting. personally, i don’t care if she composts or not. i am not a composting evangelist. i believe that every person has the right to choose for themselves without any fear of judgment or retribution from any gardening authorities whether they want to compost or not. it’s a free country and the decision to compost or not to compost should therefore be a free choice. i’ll fight for that right.

the reason it was funny to me was the fact that her excuse was that she was too busy. too busy? you should see the amount of work she puts into your yard. it’s gorgeous. the yard requires a lot of work but composting? composting involves mixing a pile of leaves and greens once a month and adding water to it once a week or so. this is not a great deal of work. i probably should also point out that she is retired.

for me it was a great example of saying “too busy” when what you really mean is “it’s not something i want to do right now.” when did it become a bad thing to say ‘i’m just not that in to that,” or “”i don’t want to do that”? why does everything have to be excused with “i’m too busy for that”?
