reading @ washington

if you have been at tapestry at anytime over the past few weeks you know that i have been talking to the administration of washington school concerning reading to at-risk kids. i heard back from the reading specialist today and it is a go. looks like we will be able to do this in the morning before school (8:40-9:00 a.m.) or after school (3:35-4:00 p.m.) depending upon what works best for you. i know many of you have already signed up saying you are interested but i need to be able to get your names to the school for the necessary background checks. if you would like to have your name added to the list let me know.

this will be so cool guys and girls. we will get to read with kids!

lighter colors please

couple-walking-in-the-dark

it is fall in wisconsin and along with cooler weather we have a diminishing amount of light during the day. one of the things that surprised pam and i when we moved to wisconsin was how short the days were during the winter compared to the south. of course, we are spoiled during the summer when it is daylight until almost 10 p.m. yet the summer is over and it is now starting to get dark much earlier. in addition, since point is an incredibly safe area in which to live we don’t have the need for many street lights. therefore, our neighborhood is VERY dark when the sun goes down and the sun is setting earlier and earlier. we are kind of used to this now that is is our 4th fall in wisconsin.

what i am not used to and never will be used to is people walking in the middle of a dark street while wearing dark clothes. i mean really! WALKING RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WHILE IT IS DARK AND THE WALKER IS WEARING REALLY DARK CLOTHES! why would you do this? i just don’t understand.

a while back we had a lady in stevens point who was arrested for shooting people with a blow dart gun in downtown point. oh yeah we are real proud. anyway, this woman said she shot people with the blow gun because she simply liked to hear people say “ouch.” i kind of think that if she had just been shooting people who wore dark clothes and walked down the middle of dark streets then no one would have seen her actions as a problem. at least, i would have been on her side.

SIDE NOTE – my wonderful wife wrote a great post on the top ten reasons she loves tapestry. i agree with most of her reasons, except for the one about the pastor being “easy on the eyes.” i tend to think the pastor’s wife is the one who is easy on the eyes. here’s her post.

SIDE SIDE NOTE – bama, why did you have to lose?

SIDE SIDE SIDE NOTE – packers, i have the same question for you too.

painting the house

house-before

the forecast says that it is going to be warm this weekend and since it is probably the last weekend of 2010 that will actually be warm in wisconsin this means that i get to paint our home during it. woohoo! the above photo is what the outside of our home presently looks like. the three photos below are the colors we are considering. if you want to help select the colors you are more than welcome to throw your vote in. of course, you are also welcome to help with a brush if you would like to. i’ll be doing this all weekend so just drop in and grab a brush.

House House-2 House-4

SIDE NOTE – as i mentioned a couple of weeks ago tapestry had to move from our single half-sheet bulletin to a folded bulletin. i’ve been putting quotes on the cover and i’m pretty pumped about this week’s quote. it is from deitrich bonhoeffer. here it is.

one act of obedience is better than one hundred sermons.

oh how i love bonhoeffer!

SIDE SIDE NOTE – it’s time for us to start gearing up for advent conspiracy – a way we have joined with many other churches in celebrating the birth of our LORD. it would be awesome to push the limits of how we celebrate CHRISTmas a little further than last year – when we bought a $5,000 well.

JESUS wants

lost and found

recently i have developed a habit of losing things while i run. thankfully i have also acquire an uncanny ability to find the things that i have lost. i’ve lost my cell phone a couple of times while running on some of our amazing trails. each time i was sure that i would never find my phone again and each time a mile or two into rerunning the route i found my phone. tonight while riding my bike back from my ride i lost my shorts. i know this sounds strange so i will explain. i wear a biker pad to protect my butt while i ride but i don’t like running in it. so i wear it when i ride my bike to where ever i am running, take it off and place on running short for my run, and then swap back to biker shorts and the pad for my bike ride home. i usually just store the running shorts on my bike rack.

today while riding back home from a run my running shorts apparently blew off my bike rack. i was sure i wouldn’t find them and considered not even going back for them but realized i had placed a $20 in the inside storage pocket awhile back. i didn’t really want to loose the shorts but i definitely didn’t want to loose the $20. so i drove along my route looking at the side of the road the whole time. it was getting dark and the shorts are gray so i was sure that i wouldn’t find them. this is when my new ability came in. i found the shorts about 2 miles away from the house.

while i’m not a big fan of loosing things when i run, i am very glad that i consistently find them when i turn back.

thanks drew

battlestar_galactica_last_supper

thanks drew, you now have me hooked on battlestar galatica. actually it is only a burgeoning addiction because i am merely on the first season but i can already tell that i enjoy the show. now i have a ton of episodes to stream on netflix. 🙂

SIDE NOTE – tapestry will be doing two baptisms sunday, october 17th (weather permitting). we’re going to do lunch before hand, baptize, and then head to washington elementary for our normal worship gathering. this will probably be a slightly cold baptism but if you are a believer in JESUS, involved in tapestry, and in need of baptism give me a shout.

SIDE SIDE NOTE – the weather forecast says that it should be decently warm this weekend so the terrell family will be painting our home. if you are interested in joining us you are more than welcome to. 🙂
